Either way, you might as well have the cracking games in the group stage. One way or another, you'll eventually be found out. This isn't the EL where you can *cough* Liverpool *cough* basically bluff your way through, as Arsenal find out every single year. You're either up for the challenge or not. Getting through an easy group only to be humiliated in the knock outs hasn't got any benefit to it other than financial. I think we learnt this in our maiden voyage; the calibre of opposition we faced and dispatched in the group were what carried us through an incredibly tough 2 legs against AC Milan. Even the Madrid game - who knows how that would've panned out had our favourite beanpole not attempted to role play as Paolo Maldini in the first 15 minutes....
The club confirm that all CL games will be played at Wembley next season. Can't help but feel a little bit sad about this.... Oh well, Spurs are on their way to Wembley!
It'll be a short term sadness. The next three seasons are going to be exciting times for us and the club
Is anyone else worried that the Wembley thing might not be such a good idea? Obviously for the 2017-18 season it's definitely the best option location wise while we're homeless. But won't we struggle to fill 90,000 seats - even for CL games? I'm just worried that the atmosphere will be a bit flat. When WHL wants to, it can truly rock despite its humble size. I was fortunate enough to have been at the mauling of Inter Milan and thinking back to that night and the atmosphere still sends shivers down my spine
Seriously doubt we'll try (or have the option) to fill the whole stadium. 60k tops? I guess we'll find out soon enough.
I think Wembley is limited to the amount of 'big' events hey can host per year, to something like 37. If you cap capacity at 50k then events don't count as 'big' which is what we're going to do for the majority of the games, opening it up to as full as possible for any headline ties against the likes of Barca etc., I reckon.
That's what I'm worried about. 50,000 in a 90,000 stadium may well produce higher ticket revenue, but the atmosphere will just be weird.
Yeah could be, I do get what you mean. The place can seem a bit empty on a quiet night on England games, though atmosphere tends to be better/louder at club games than at international non-tournament matches. I'd still rather be in London than MK though so Wembley seems to be the best option even if it sometimes leaves ~50k knocking around a 90k stadium.
As has already been mentioned, the stadium is restricted on the number of events with attendance of over 50k, which is the capacity without opening the upper tiers. If we were allowed to use these upper tiers, then the hire costs would escalate plus the Controlled Parking Zones around the stadium would have to be extended further afield making access less easy. Obviously it's great for many fans who will now have the opportunity to see us in CL action whereas at WHL, they would struggle to obtain tickets. However, I am still unsure why a WHL with a reduced capacity doesn't meet UEFA's criteria.
I thought that not meeting the criteria at WHL with reduced capacity was more to do with ongoing works and required UEFA access conditions that could not have been met. THST said as much in their reaction to the Wembley announcement, for what that is worth. "Building work around the ground meant that UEFA requirements for staging Champions League games could not be met. These requirements cover areas such as access and support for UEFA officials and the media, safety and parking. On top of that, the potential loss of 4,000 seats at White Hart Lane due to building work, together with the reduction in capacity imposed by further UEFA requirements, would mean that even accommodating our season ticket holders would have been difficult." http://www.thstofficial.com/thst-news/thst-statement-on-wembley-stadium
Also this http://www.tottenhamhotspur.com/news/champions-league-ticket-announcement-130716/ Full capacity for Wembley for all CL games and looks like there will be some tasty ticket packages for the CL games too.
Absolutely fantastic news! £70 for 3 games? I paid a fiver less just for the Young Boys match. Absolute bargain, well done Levy
I know right!? Who'd have thunk it! The West side is apparently the 'home' end and you get the same seat for all three!
