Don't know if this is appropriate to this thread or the 'weekend plans' thread and as my 'country' have again failed miserably to qualify for another tournament finals. Have been clearing out a cupboard in my kitchen and discovered an old shirt box (?) which contained among other football programmes one brought back by my Dad in 1963; England v. Scotland. Compare the **** we produce today with this team fifty plus years ago: Bill Brown - Tottenham Hotspur RB - Alex Hamilton - Dundee LB - Eric Caldow - Glasgow Rangers RH - The great Dave Mackay - Tottenham Hotspur CH - Ian Ure - Dundee LH - Jim Baxter - Glasgow Rangers RW - Willie Henderson - Glasgow Rangers IR - John White - Tottenham Hotspur CF - Ian St John - Liverpool IL - Dennis Law - Manchester Uniited OL - Davy Wilson - Glasgow Rangers Where did it all go wrong? - as the room service punter remarked to Mr Best!!!!!! On a brighter point the box also contained the programme from Led Zeppelin at Earls Court in 1975 ( me, not my Dad). If memory serves me well this was the same trip I witnessed Stewart Kennedy's debacle (1 - 5) before his retreat to the Australian Outback! At least we won in 1963!
Thought team might provoke such a response so in the interest of fairness the programme lists Billy McNeill (Glasgow Celtic) as "reserve to travel". Ho-hum!
^^^Dave Makay had that photo in the window of his tailor's shop in Winchmore Hill, North London for many years.
That would indicate that you had no faith in England winning the thing if it's taken you all day to realise they weren't even in the poll.
You work it out; my earliest memory of watching England in a major tournament was 1970 vs West Germany. 2-0 up and the ****ers contrived to lose 3-2 and break my childish heart. It's all been downhill since then.
