I guess the people booing want him to play badly, thus further enhancing their arguement. It is only a pre-season game, so the outcome of the game has little importance to these fans compared to the desire never to see Squillachi play for Arsenal again.
Again our defenders have been AWFUL another two goal lead gifted away. When we dont have our best attackers on the pitch the mediocrity of our defence REALLY shows itself. I have to say I found that game a little ominous.(considering the start of the Season is soo close) Those who claim we dont need better quality defenders should really take the rose tinted glasses off and show a little objectivity. They do not match up well against the best defenders in Europe. Sagna and Vermaelen are the only Top quality defenders we have. I dont how anyone who watched that game could argue otherwise.
Martin Keown makes a good point when he says that buying a defender is by no means a solution to the problem. They need to work better as a unit. This could maybe explain why they have been so poor at set pieces in recent times.
Well its absolutely true that we need to work better as a unit and our attacking style will mean we also get caught out more often than some teams. However, It's also blatantly obvious that many of the goals we concede come from 'individual errors' and that Djourou, Koscielney and Gibbs would not make the starting line-ups of any of our rivals. Despite being 'good footballers' they are not great 'defenders'.
Another 2 goal lead thrown away. Things haven't changed since the end of last season, pathetic defending undoing the good work of the strikers. Wenger needs to sort it out fast, no more excuses, he has 2 weeks to go and he's sitting on his hands again, will he ever learn?
Ditto Mr Toughie's sentiments. I would add that the players themselves also never seem to learn and wonder what they ever do in training since they appear to get caught out everytime. However since Arsene is the boss and this occurs all too often on his watch he really is in the last chance saloon if our season is ruined because of continuing defensive errors.
btw, the Bear, Gibbs wasn't playing, it was Traore... and Koscielny was very good in organising and leading the defence in the first half. then squillaci came on...
You don't know that he's sitting on his hands. He might be working tremendously hard to bring someone in as far as you know. The problem is that it poses a huge risk to spend £20m+ on Gary Cahill. Arsenal's rivals can maybe afford to take the punt but I feel Arsenal might not. TheBear - I'd argue that Koscielny and Djorou are better players than anyone behind Ferdinand and Vidic in Man Utd's pecking order, but that doesn't disprove your point.
Guys, it could be a lot worse. We could have let in 2 goals against Brighton or even worse still, lost to Kaizer Chiefs (who the feck are they anyway)
It would be a lot worse if they don't learn from today The trouble is, if you consider these silly defensive letdowns over the last two seasons, they don't indeed seem to learn ........ anything.
dude is barely a striker, confidence is not great, this style of play demands a ruthless forward. Defence coaching is not working well enough + the defenders are not good enough. Djourou, Skillaci, and Kos(although he has the right traits). How can we arrogantly go into next season without investing in a CB?? 2 goals leads, 3, 4 goals, when will it end??
You are delusional. We had 6 players back - when Boca scored their second goal. Nobody was a particularly out of position. It was down to ANOTHER individual error . Fans shouldnt constantly blame the coach for all our problems - Let us not forget Wenger is a proven winner. It's the likes of Djourou/Squillaci who arnt.
I think and believe that are certain defenders which should never play together. One of these partnerships in Djourou and Squillaci... I don't particularly rate Squillaci but he done a fair job in the past when paired with Koscielny (referring in particular to the match against Sunderland away last season when we played the majority of the second half with 10 men and minus our captain). I don't know why Wenger persists with Squillaci... I still maintain he needs to be shipped out, Djourou needs to drop to the bench. We need another first choice centreback pairing with Vermaelen. In particular our defensive strategy as a whole needs to change, for example, we keep pushing up and not applying pressure on the man in possession thereby allowing them to play a pass behind our lines, which invariably leaves them square. Does anyone know what can be done to remedy this?
Well it's tricky. It's Ok to play from the back but pushing too high a line can be suicide. Dortmund achieved it recently by having at least one centreback very deep at all times. Subotic would stay back and Hummels would play a little further forward while distributing the ball. Also the Fullbacks are first and full most defenders. Attacking responsibilities are secondary. In fact most great defences throughout history contain one more technical centreback and one more robust 'ball-winner'. We just have a collection of small technical defenders. No balance at all.
