Will we ever be a top performing club again?

Discussion in 'Liverpool' started by Sharpe*, May 23, 2016.

?

How long will it take us to become a challenger for the title?

  1. Next year. No teams are strong. We have no European football so will challenge.

    29.4%
  2. 2-3 years slowly building a team under Klopp.

    11.8%
  3. Depends on who we buy.

    5.9%
  4. With our transfer policy we'll never compete with the likes of Chelsea, City and United.

    11.8%
  5. I have absolutely no idea!

    41.2%

    very sensible...

more money = more money down the pan on wages, agents and greed..

my point is really this (it agrees with above)... 8 into 4 doesn't do and clubs will break down under the strain of competing and failing... as normal... they'll keep on sacking managers and trying. I do not believe we will see a different top 4 each year with no consequence to the clubs falling out of top 4.

and honestly... secretly the top clubs are already talking super league to avoid this.

There can always be a AC milan... OR liverpool OR as i pointed out newcastle type who just fall off due to amateur hour organisation but to expect clubs to say oh 6th ah well next year... well expectations alone make that impossible.

we only need look at any arsenal forum to see what that means....

There is no real rising tide in the prem. I think the standards have dropped. FFS since modric left and scholes retired i've not seen a bloody proper CM in the league!

    Nope.

We smashed Italy in the co-efficient this season, and they've only got more points than us once in the last 5 years.

So your 'facts' aren't facts at all mate. Sorry

thanks to LFC... and you are now trying the this year line when the evidence has been there for all to see.

you deny we've dropped off our levels by 2/3 points then?

you deny we see sides regularly dump the europa and hurt the numbers.

you deny we've done form topping drops to seeing sides falling down the club lists and ending up not no 1 seeds but no 2 (before the change to league winners ranked no 1?)

As of today cheslea are ranked 5th in europe. they are going to tumble down that list. they have been the only one thats consistently up there but...

    33.050
    30.285
    28.357
    23.714
    20.850

    consistent trend down wards

    Arsneal

    22.050
    21.285
    21.357
    22.714
    17.850

consistently dour in europe for 5 years.

    Utd
    16.050
    21.285
    26.357 (moyes)
    2.714
    15.850

oh dear, once very consistent in europe... now tumbling.. .why... unacceptably poor decision making and slipping standards

    city:
    20.050
    10.285
    22.357
    17.714
    28.850

finally one good year??? so that proves everything else is wrong???

Spurs are the only club thats consistent
    10.050
    19.285
    18.357
    11.714
    14.850

thats consistently trying to get out of europe.

    ................

Incidentally.... you do know we have had more team in europe than Italy every year? we've have one extra each year and still were ****.

You said the Italians were catching us in the co-efficient and we were 'sinking down in the co-efficient over the last 5 years'

Both of which are factually incorrect statements, proved by the link I gave you.

I follow the Euro rankings a lot and here's my take.

Our standards have dropped and our "big" clubs have fallen down the rankings individually with the exception of City and Spurs who have risen over the period.

    However:

The Italians are gash with the exception of Juve, and as Tobes pointed out, have only beaten us once in the last 5 years.

I don't agree with MITO that they are a massive threat. A threat yes, but not that great.

The main reason for both of the above is the small improvement in German teams overall and the utter dominance of La Liga in terms of the sharp end of both Euro comps. They are hoovering up the points, not us or the Italians.

I think we will hold on to 3rd place as we have an extra CL place (It's where the big points are scored) and teams not fighting for the title will take the Europa more seriously than they have in the past.

    Is the right answer.

The Spanish have been having a period of virtual domination and the Germans 2 giants have been consistently strong.

The Italians aren't close to over hauling us.

We went through a period of European dominance and now the Spaniards are having their turn. It's not a indictment of a massive fall in standards in the PL. I mean even you lot made a European final ffs. :bandit:

Irrelevant, it's the average that is counted.

To say you follow the Euro rankings, you really should know there isn't much difference in terms of points scoring between the EL and CL!

    Actually there is:

The CL awards more bonus points so even teams like Arsenal who make the last 16 can garner the same points as teams who get deep into the EL.

The EL winners usually end up fairly high in the yearly ranking but it's the difference between the rest of the teams that's telling. Also many of the higher scorers in the EL are carrying CL group bonus points from earlier.

Look at the Bonus points for this years ranking:

CL teams earn more points? Shocker! Who would have thought the better teams would perform better eh? <laugh>

The points scoring isn't much different bar the bonus points but that's countered by the extra EL games and ****ter opponents.

    Sad effort.

Ignores entirely the palpable panic this had become before city got an absolute dolly draw in the last 16.. and honestly lfc rode the wave of miracles to the final....

Utterly rewriting everything written by the press on it.

I showed how coefficients of the clubs dropped off over last 5 years clearly

That shows less rounds played, less wins... and by extension shows the drop off we've seen.

If Spain dominates that really 2/3 teams and 1/2 from Germany max.. with only Juventus being good enough from Italy and Psg from France the truth is we have been seeing just one english clubs in cl later round were we were seeing 2/3

If we are denying Utd and chelsea have done less and less in Europe. That arsenal have failed every knockout phase or that city have finally and only now after an absolute peach of a draw done anything in 5 years.

    To put it simply.

Best teams could always buy A class players.

Mid table teams were buying D class players.

    Now..

Best teams can still buy A class players

But, midtable teams can now buy B or C class players.

Best teams can't buy players better than they were because they were already shopping in the elite.

On top of that, the top teams can't cherry pick the best players from their own league in England anymore (like they do in Germany, see Bayern & Dortmund for example) because lower teams don't need to sell. Stones is a good example, go back 3/4 years and Everton would have had to sell Stones for £30m when they gt that offer but now they get £100m from the league each year and their transfer fund isn't dependant on selling best players. Same with other teams, they are less desperate so can either hold onto players or force the buying clubs hand more and use more of their budget restricting their business elsewhere.

Competitiveness of the league has definitely had a contributing factor to our performances in Europe. Top teams can't rest on their laurels anymore thinking we only have to do so much to get top 4, now they know they need to be at 90% all season to get top 4 and as such, are having to priorities that against Europe & potentially the FA Cup.
