Giggs would get more young player respect than a LVG or Mourinho and shouldn't be overlooked while looking at pros and cons .Man U have tried Moyes and LVG since Ferguson's departure and what has your big money got you .Will " Untouchables " be players or silverware the next few seasons .If it's one thing Mourinho is good at is splitting teams into groups . I think Mourinho took the job just to ditch Mata again .

    From Sky Sports:

Sources close to the deal have told us the negotiations were “easy”, mainly due to Mourinho’s overwhelming desire to become Manchester United manager.

Your points are taken Swarbs but I'm wondering what effect the Chelsea experience will have had on JM. Will it dent his confidence, will the losing momentum follow him etc etc? I have to say that's it's brave to take on a coach who was sacked because his team was so far down the table, NOT the greatest of endings to start a new position.

I wouldn't have through so. After all, he had a bad experience with Chelsea in 07/08 when they sacked him after six games, then bounced back to win the treble with Inter. In general I'd expect a good manager to learn from an experience like that and use it to move forwards.

Also, as with most things Utd and Mourinho, I think people read too much into it. When Liverpool appointed Klopp no one asked it that was wise after his last season at Dortmund when they flirted with relegation, got battered in the CL and threw away a winning position in the cup. In fact his start to that season was even worse than Mourinho's last at Chelsea, but unlike Chelsea Dortmund gave Klopp the respect and the time to turn it around.

The more I think about it the more ideal it becomes for Mourhino. Fergie leaves and the last two managers and last 3 years have provided enough distance from Fergie's legacy and the manager coming in now. Moyes and Van Gaal were clearly unsuitable but they've, in a way, done an important job post-Fergir in providing a break for the guy coming in now. If I was Mourinho I couldnt have wanted a better time to come in.

    don't you think

contrary to popular belief Jose doesn't like pressure. He falls apart when the going gets tough. Undoubtedly he is a good manager in some ways (tactically and motivation during the honey moon period) it's fair to say he will be expected to win silverware in his first season and substantial silverware at that. His time at Chelsea was a bit like that girl you keep sleeping with because she was the easy option and not becuase the she was anything special. The truth is Jose has been flirting his Portuguese and off with united for quite some time now and finally he has his date. will the relationship pan out the way he imagines? or will it end in tears?

I did say back in 2013 I would be surprised if Mourinho went straight from the Real job to the Utd job, seemed like too much to take on after his acrimonious time at Real. But now as you say it's a very different story - we've tried two managers and neither has really shown they are up to the scale of the job, so it is more of a win - win for Mourinho - anything he achieves at Utd will be compared to Moyes and LVG rather than straight against SAF.

Hard to tell tbh - he has never really been under pressure and given time to respond. Both times he was under pressure at Chelsea he was sacked before having any chance to really turn it around, and similarly at Real he had one difficult season and was out the door so no way to be sure what would have happened had they kept him on.

I don't think he falls apart, but he does have a tendency to get too confrontational and controversial, with the eye gouging and the accusations of bias. That's a characteristic of all great managers - SAF was great at manipulating the media to take pressure off the team and onto himself when the players needed a break - but Mourinho does tend to overdo it a bit. It will be interesting to see if he manages to tone it down at Utd, as I'm sure that's something the board will have wanted to discuss before making the appointment final.

You have to respect Moyes and LVG for trying after Ferguson.

Completely agree. And also, he now has the relative freedom to take his own direction with the club. Personally, I think he has real ambition for United. He'll relish the job imo.

After Chelsea won the league who expected Jose to be the manager of Manchester United a year later, how quick things change in football

Real lack of love for Jose on this board.... apart from Treb who has convinced himself that Jose adapts to his environment and will play attacking football the United way with 11 local lads

When the seagulls follow the trawler, it is because they think sardines will be thrown into the sea.
