Darrell Clarke has this morning moved into 5/1 second favourite to become the next manager of Leeds United. The current Elland Road 'head coach' Steve Evans has yet to have his future clarified beyond the conclusion of his current contract at the end of next month. Evans today said he was 'hurting' over owner Massimo Cellino's decision to delay the process of finalising his position – but "respected the right" of the Italian businessman to take his time in formulating a plan going forward. Leeds, though, are believed to have been mulling over possible replacement according to the Yorkshire Evening Post and Clarke's odds have shortened dramatically this morning in the market offered on who will be in charge at Elland Road next season. Oldham Athletic boss John Sheridan was the early favourite but his odds have moved out to 7/1 behind Clarke. What DC got.... A fanbase who loves him. A squad of players who want to play for him. Owners who want him. New stadium soon to come. What DC would get at Leeds.... A fanbase who want to get to the Prem so dont really have patience which DC will need at that club. A squad of players who will be on silly wages and will struggle to get them all playing how he wants, thats working damn hard. I think DC will need to make major changes. Owners who have a really bad reputation who change managers more than most. DC wont get the time he needs here. Got a nice stadium though. Why would he leave for Leeds? If he leaves then I think it will be for a championship club, although this would be a gamble for any championship club due to DC having not managed in league 1 so how will he adapt to the championship. I can see him at a club like Birmingham. But Leeds, although got massive history, they are in a mess off the pitch and the fact that they been hiring lower league managers might be because any decent manager in the championship wouldnt go near Leeds!
I would always weigh up what they're like as an employer, how they have treated the previous incumbents and whether it would be possible to achieve "the impossible" in an impossible timescale. Leeds Utd is a terrible job! Loads of decent managers have tried and failed there. I think it's one of those clubs that is pretty rotten to the core, like Newcastle and Villa. They need root and branch reform. I'm certain that there are better jobs than manager of Leeds Utd, and Bristol Rovers is definitely one of them. If DC wants a short period of employment, a bitter experience and a long holiday then this may be the job for him. But I reckon that after a couple of years at the fantastic club that he's helped to make a great place again it will take a lot to tempt him away. My guess is that we'll be cruising past Leeds anyway in the not too distant future.
DC cleared out the rotten apples in our club and recruited a group, who may not be the best around, but are bonded in a way that is magic. Our club; owners; management; support staff and players, has a special relationship which DC and his unique talents created. Almost like a quieter version of Brian Clough. Would he be given such freedom to do the same with the players at Leeds? I doubt it. Stay where we all appreciate you DC!!!
DC won't be going anywhere.... The only thing this is doing is putting a bigger price tag on his head! Wael might have to cough up a bit more money in his wage packet.!
They have had something like 10 managers in 4 seasons!! He will be crazy to go to them. I would be disappointed if and when DC goes. As I was when Lambert left. But I was happy for Lambert and im sure I would be happy for DC too but not to Leeds. I cant see what they can offer him under their current owners. Leeds are a massive club but its definately the wrong time to go there as manager. Better off sticking with us if DC got any sense.
I don't think it as black and white as that. Leeds are a massive club. Any manager that goes there and turns them around will become a legend. As a manager you have to be confident in your own ability to do that. Leeds will be able to offer him a better package. Football management is a fickle business, who would have thought that Cotterill would be out on his ear so quickly after leading us to one of our best seasons ever. Throw in that the current regime at Rovers inherited Clarke rather than him being their choice then his position may not be as secure as some seem to think if you start the season badly. It's a huge dilemma for him and if I'm honest I'm not sure what I would do in his position.
Yes its a shame that SC left you, he was doing so well You are right though about being confident in your own ability. I said on another thread (Leeds board) that DC likes a challenge and he could see Leeds as a challenge. Personally I see it as suicide! If it goes wrong, and law of averages says it will at Leeds under current owners, then it will be a massive dent on where DC can go next. He is building something here. He only just had his 1st full season as manager in the football league. He has no league 1, championship or prem managering experience. If he does well then that could springboard him to bigger things. But I think THAT job is too much for 99.9% of managers and he could struggle to get something good like what he got now with us. New owners who will financially back him and a squad that he has assembled who will fight for him. A fanbase who loves him and a possible new stadium to come. Why leave this now? A good season with us this coming season and he will get better offers than Leeds which will put him in a stronger position for his future managerial career.
I can see where you are coming from LS, Leeds have the historic potential of a top drawer Premiership club. Anyone who gets them back to the Don Revie status will be quite rightly considered one of the all time greats. It will happen one day I'm sure. DC is the sort of bloke who likes a challenge and if he were offered the right authority to do things his way, then he would be a fool not to seriously consider taking up the baton. I think he would need to clear out the dross that are in place and put his type of people in place. So can he feel that the owners are up to his requirements?
New from the Post.... Rovers have REBUFFED Leeds approach but are expecting another approach. Rovers have offered DC a new 3 year contract too. Bristol Rovers have offered manager Darrell Clarke a new and improved long-term contract in a bid to ward off interest from Leeds United, the Post understands. Clarke yesterday became an odds-on favourite with bookmakers to replace Steve Evans as manager at Elland Road and the Post understands that a formal approach for his services was made by Leeds owner Massimo Chellino on Monday night. It is believed that the initial approach has been rebuffed and that Rovers have set a number of pre-conditions that need to be met before they allow Clarke the opportunity to speak with the Leeds owner. The Post also understands that chairman Steve Hamer met with Clarke on Monday lunchtime to discuss the matter in anticipation of an approach from Leeds United and that the offer of a three-year-deal was tabled, which the Rovers boss went away to think about. Rovers are priming themselves for a second approach from Leeds imminently and would not stand in Clarke's way of going to Elland Road for talks should Cellino accept the pre-conditions that have been set out by the club's lawyers. Clarke is currently on a 12-month rolling contract and it is understood that Rovers would demand a six-figure compensation fee should the manager decide that a switch to Elland Road would further his career. Neither club has yet to comment officially on the matter, but Rovers are expected to clarify their position at some point later today. As yet, the Yorkshire side have failed to meet the conditions set out by Rovers to enable any talks to take place and until that happens there is nothing else to report. We can also confirm that Rovers have offered Darrell a new and improved three-year contract to remain as Bristol Rovers manager.
