I'd be concerned that he'd do a Chelsea with you. It's happened before and history repeats. I'm just wondering if he isn't a tad too flamboyant but let's just wait and see. Have a good summer. My partner likes cricket so I'll be roped in to watch that.

It's perhaps one of the most overused phrases in football, particularly when referring to us in recent years, but that trophy was pretty much the definition of papering over the cracks of LVG's reign.

We did nothing to really threaten in the league, which is ultimately the most valid measure of any club's season, and were pretty poor in Europe. Imo we were also quite lucky to even win the FA Cup - it was more down to the quality of the players and bizarre refereeing (Smalling's first foul wasn't a foul, but by calling it as one Clattenburg managed to prevent them scoring!) than LVG's tactics.

Winning a trophy is always good, but that doesn't really disguise the fact that we have been tactically poor, overly negative and generally poor to watch. I think fan would be much more supportive of LVG if we'd won one trophy in two years whilst scoring more than 49 goals. It doesn't make LVG a success any more than the 2012 LC made Dalglish a success.

The fact is that van Gaal was going after one more season anyway, there is no way he'd have had a contract extension unless he suddenly decided to rip up his philosophy (I feel stupid even typing the word) and delivered some football worth watching next season.

As such, it was correct that United should go for Mourinho now as we know what his capabilities are and he will definitely steady the ship and sort us out, even if it is only short term. The fact is there are no 'long term' candidates out there at the moment who are available. If Mourinho only lasts two seasons during that time an eye can be kept on Koeman or Pochettino or Simeone or Blanc and then they could come in as the potential longer term manager.

On the other hand, Jose could be superb and stick around for a good five years. You never know.

There are too many glib cliches being tripped out by people who don't actually know about what he will and wont do at United.

Even if he did rip up his philosophy, he stated he would retire at the end of next season anyway. Which pretty much made him a lame duck as soon as it became obvious he wouldn't be able to deliver a title or a decent European campaign in his final year.

Ultimately the right decision had been made. It is clear that LVG had lost the confidence of everyone - fans, players, executive. Even for owners who have no clue about football, the reality that United is playing boring football must have been chilling. All the revenues endorsements sponsorships are largely based on the United brand and the playing of winning but attractive football. Boring AND non successful football would be a no-no.

The thing about Mourinho is that he brings hope. Yes, he brings lots of other stuff. But as a short term appointment , he is as good as any. Those who say this is not the United way, I say just live in the real world. the likes of Bayern, Real Madrid wouldn't have done any different.

So we just hold on our hats and let's "enjoy" the ride.

    Exactly.

I do think had he he got fourth he'd have more than likely seen out his contract. It was just pointless him staying when he didn't, it was obvious they had to get the available man in now, not piss about waiting another year.

I don't even think van Gaal can feel harshly done by. He stuck to his guns and it didn't work, that's life.
