He got sacked way before the official announcement and probably before the FA Cup final even though he was kept in the dark about it, snidey Fergie posed for pictures with him and the FA Cup at Wembley knowing he was already sacked.

I think realistically he knew full well the moment they ****ed it up v west ham. His future was tied to 4th place (perhaps) but that was final nail in coffin.

In the end some players showed they wanted the cup win like rooney and made the difference over and above the awful performance put in on the day by their team.

So classy or not Utd were facing into a stark choice of wait 12 months and appoint giggs cos frankly I'm not sure there was another manager available to them bar giggs or mourinho. Mourinho was available and they had to act realistically.

As people have indicated Jorge mendes and mourinho's camp have been agitating for a month, its clear the minute there was contact they step up the leak so mourinho's managed to start his tenure by creating controversy and potential conflict.

My view is its been done to clear house and force giggs's hand. I think there will be a lot of lip service played to ex-players here but mourinho will not want to have a "successor" or a "ferguson man" in his camp here and will be moving to get giggs to resign.

The problem utd have is barring de gea and perhaps smalling they really don't have a lot of mourinho players. I can see rooney fit in a lampard type role but we will see. shaw and dramin should be good enough but mourinho will want two good DCMs and a CB post haste.

I agree, he needed 4th and the Cup to keep his job.

However, there's ways and means of doing things, and they've shown him zero respect with the way this has been handled.

Giggs won't stick about under Mourinho, as he won't want him as his No.2, so he'll therefore face the prospect of being shunted further into the backroom. I think he'll leave in search of a managers job now.

The need a CB, 1 DM and a striker minimum.

Granted he was unlikely to remain but the underhand tactics he employed to get LVG out is a bit poor...
Still, I guess, they all got what they wanted..
Will be very interesting season of "managers" next year!

There is n.o guarantee that the special one would succeed where he failed.

I think in fairness yes but theres two possible sides to it. Who leaked it really. Utd... or mourinho camp. My view is mourinho has most to gain form it so I'd lean towards them doing it.

I share the view on giggs. Its time to fly the coup and see if you can manage a club not just be assistant.

The BBC are no better than the gutter press on this issue, they even had a " Jose's Countdown To Success" 10 things Maureen must do to bring success back to OT.

The decision was definitely made well before the final. Some papers in Spain (AS and Marca I think) had already written before the Final that an agreement had been reached and that an announcement will be made soon after the match.

I think there is no way he was not aware of his impending sacking, especially someone of his experience. He must have known that he was only going to keep his job if he got 4th place. The FA cup was irrelevant as far as his job was concerned. When City drew against Swansea, he knew his goose was cooked. The only thing that he was uncertain about would have been the timing of the announcement.

He found out Mourinho was getting his job when his wife rang him on Saturday night - while he was still at Wembley...

As she'd read the story on the BBC website.

    That's piss poor tbf.

Just read that 3 months ago man u paid Jose £4m to wait until may to take over at OT, if true and before the CL place was lost it looks like it was decided once pep chose city over Utd.

Piss poor treatment of the man whichever way they try and paint his sacking.

According to the press, they paid him the £4m as a retainer to sit on his backside until a decision is made at the end of the season. At that time Van Gaal still had a chance to carry on if he got 4th.

If he had achieved 4th then Van Gaal would continue and Mourinho would be free to take up offers from other clubs. He basically got £4 million for waiting a few months. He must have been praying every day for United to lose every premiership match :)

If 4th didn't happen (after the City/Swansea match), negotiations with Mourinho would start which exactly what happened according to the papers.

Pep going to City could well have been the trigger. But I wouldn't feel sorry for Van Gaal as he will get more than £5m for sitting on his backside.

His agent - Mendes - contacted Everton a couple of weeks before Martinez was sacked, to see if there was any potential interest.

There was ongoing dialogue until it became clear that United were going to bullet LvG after he failed to get 4th spot.

    True that.

Giggs is an absulte joke(although well paid for it)sitting like a puppet on two former managers laps as nothing more than a dumbstruck figurehead living on the broken promise that he will take over as manager.
I could be wrong if Jose ends up as Giggs assistant though.<whistle>

The most ironic thing is the BBC "calling into question" how things are dealt with at United and stating how poor it is that he found out about the decision via a press leak.

A press leak from the bloody BBC!

    Joke of an organisation.

Reminds me of when they apologise about things but report it as if they're a third party.
