It was reported as £8m Liverpool were aiming to pay a few months ago.

Nothing is as reliable as fact. I take nothing for granted. Therefore everything on a rumour thread always has an if, and most of the time the if is very iffy. I agree there might be chances of things happening, but that's all they are.

The worst very likely scenario I can see at the moment for Saints is that Victor will go elsewhere. I would say that's probable, almost certain, unless he's decided the grass isn't necessarily greener. Graziano looks like he might be extending his contract, but that's just paper talk. Mane is contracted for another two seasons, so Koeman isn't going to let him go. If Pelle stays, Dusan will too. That covers everything so far. I've heard we might be in for a few players of note, but that's paper talk also, so complete bull until we sign them or not.

So bye-bye Victor, hello Black-Box fantastic replacement.

For the first time in years he was playing regularly. I don't think he'll give that up. Besides, 2 years left on his contract, so he'll be retained, in my opinion.

With the style of Leicester, vardy and long upfront would be pretty scary. Fans are reacting to long the same way as most of us did, looking at the cost against the goals that he has scored, he is not going to get a team 25 goals a season, but the team will play much better with him in it

It's pretty clear that Vic will be Spurs main target in the summer, without dembele they were pants in midfield, and most Spurs fans wanted rid of dembele last summer

Would be surprised and a little disappointed if Pelle's contract were extended. Finish out his last year, sure. But an extension doesn't make any sense to me.

But whatever, Reed and co. have earned the benefit of doubt so if it happens, I'll trust them.

Au contraire, I think Pelle does well enough for us to warrant an extension. A proven EPL striker (who also has more to his game than just goals) is surely needed by a team with only two fit strikers including one (Mane) who may be leaving and two strikers who may be part timers. Remember Ron always says it can take a foreign player a year to settle into the EPL....I can understand us looking for some stability. Whether he wants to stay is a different question, but I would be pleased if he did.

Long has been central to our improvement in the second half of the season and his speed alone casts doubt in the mind of defenders...and other players can take advantage of that. I'm no expert on Long's previous career but I bet he is....he will not be in a hurry to leave a side where he is finding his feet and enjoying life. People keep mentioning his age, but he doesn't look like he is slowing to me...for footballers, thirty is the new twenty five.

Hi Guys, Gills fan here in peace. <cheers>

Apologies if it is already stated in this thread yet but do you know if/when your retained list is likely/has been announced? The reason why I ask is that I still like to keep tabs on our previous players and I think from memory, your young keeper Paulo Gazzaniga may be out of contract this year? What chance do you guys think he will be kept on as number 2/3 or do you expect him to be moved on? Also what are your opinions on him now after such a shaky start when Adkins bought him?

    Thanks in advance <ok>

You've hit the nail on the head. If a team buy younger players and improve them or the players just improve because they are gaining experience, they are more likely to move on, as a player in his early twenties is less likely to finish his career at a club than a player about thirty. And as they are in their prime, we are more likely to be offered top money and therefore be tempted to sell them on. So the cycle begins. Hopefully, as we improve, fewer players will move on too quickly...but it is a decent model as long as we maintain the core of the team.

Gazza has always found it hard to get into our team....even in times of dire need, the aged Kelvin Davis has been preferred. I doubt he will find it any easier now we have improved as a side. It is likely we will try and sign our loanee, Stek, or look for another back up keeper....with European group stages next season, we need a reliable and decent second keeper. He needs experience....not sure he will ever get it at Saints. Does he want to remain keeper number three? Someone who has kept an eye on the U21s may have a different view, but I doubt it.

I'm sure last night at the commencement of the wonderful spectacle that was to pit two of Spain's finest footballing teams...

Sorry, thought I was Ides then (although I am sure his footballing knowledge may know the A).

They said that Sevilla's team cost c. £30m and they sold the players on for c. £220m, over the past so many seasons.

For me for the past two seasons I think this is our model and said so a couple of years ago, that we keep buying players for £10m, sell for £25m, buy for £15m, sell for £30m and so on as this is the main way we improve our squad with better players and have them for 2-3 years. It will help us stay around the 5-8th place in the EPL and occasionally threaten the top 4, win domestic cups and do better each year should we qualify for Europe.

There is no way we can compete with maybe half of the league so we needed to come up with a model that is proven to work. I'm fairly sure Athletic Madrid also dis this to an extent and Villarreal a number of seasons back.

Get this model right and it can click and I can see our ceiling go up on player costs in go to £20m, then £25m maybe £30m, each time the sell on % gets increased well over 50%.

    Just an early morning thought...

He signed a new contract (think it may be 4 years but uncertain on that!) a few months back. Think we still have hopes for him, has been ever improving in the U21s. As Fran said, he needs a loan out now.

Yup, gazza needs a loan. I would still like to keep him and I think the board feels the same.
He impressed when Stek was injured before Forster was back but we need a more experienced back up.
Gaza needs regular football in front of a crowd.

Those already (incredibly) losing faith would do well to remember that we are in the group stages of Europa league. We have committed one of the best goalkeepers, one of the best centre halves and one of most promising midfielders in the league to long term contracts and we have very few (if any) first teamers out of contract. It will all be fine. COYS

Why are people talking as if the city actually makes a huge difference in a players decision making process when choosing a new club. The main factor at play is, and I know this is a massive shock to some, the CLUB in question. The size of the club, likelihood of winning trophies and the money. You don't see players turning down the likes of Swansea or Saints to play for Charlton do you? Location is so far down on the list in terms of deciding which club to play for.
