    yup
Greenhoff went for a volley came off the out side of his foot which was going miles wide hit a defender running back with him and looped in.
just seemed one of those games you seem destined to lose
then on the Wed following we win the EC 3-1 in Rome
Paisley "last time i was here i was in a Sherman " <laugh>

    Edit
just realised that my description of Utd's second goal was done from my notoriously dodgy memory so all characters portrayed do not represent real people in any form <whistle>

I see what you did there but the Arsenal manager is still there based on his early successes at the club and the steady cash stream he created from their continuous qualification to the CL.

Everton fans desperately want success but the Moyes years stifled their hopes and expectations.

Genuine question: Do you think he'll give you the type of football that you want to see or is the increased likelihood of trophies all that matters?

Just seemed a strange question since we won a trophy yesterday and still want rid of van Gaal.
Maureen is more than capable of getting a team to play attacking football, his first Chelsea team set a points and goals scored record for the PL and his Real team played a very expansive attacking game.
So in short, yes, he can give us the type of football we want (most United supporters). The chance of more trophy's is a very nice bonus as well <ok>

Still think Mourinho was a very very poor choice. Good to see I guess.

Honestly, I've seen enough from him at Porto and Real Madrid to suggest he adapts his game to the club he manages. I am sure the first thing that will happen is we'll go through a season where all his priority will be on defence. I also have no doubt that this will be ugly (but still better than Van Gaal btw). Once he's got the defence sorted he'll build the attack in front and he'll look to play an expansive style.

The only negative with Mourinho for me is, he has a habit of washing his dirty laundry in public. Something the club has up until now, avoided. The Rooney bollox 6 years ago being about the closest we've come to it but otherwise you don't hear much of a peep about what goes on behind the scenes.

BTW there are plenty of us for who the result or trophies are defintely NOT all that matters. If we'd won ****loads under Van Gaal watching the thick pea soup he served up, I would have eventually slit my wrists.

This is the point I was asking about. For many fans, including some of ours, success and bragging rights seem to be the prime motive for following football - an extension of the tribalism that permeates the game.
For those who also want to be entertained by their team then it becomes a bit more complex. You still want to win of course, but don't want to be bored ****less in the process.
I don't pretend to have the time or inclination to watch a lot of world football so I know little of Mourinho's times abroad beyond the statistics. Those admittedly impressive stats tell you nothing about way they were achieved, and I really can only go on the more extensive experience of watching his Chelsea teams. Based on that I can only say I think his style, though different to LVG's is not much nearer to the tradition of PL era Utd.
I suppose as ever, we'll just have to wait and see.

This is the problem I have great difficulty explaining to the likes of UIR unfortunately. Result is all that matters to some. Well if that's the case why bother watching. Tune in to Final Scores at 5pm then. The other myth I can't stand is the idea that if you play entertaining football you can't be solid defensively. Or put it another way, you have to choose between playing entertaining football OR be good defensively.

Some will always quote Wenger and say, ah well what has attacking, entertaining football got him! Errrm no, the reason they fail is NOT because they play entertaining football, it's bcos they've been **** defensively. Just because you play entertaining football, doesn't mean you forget your defence. The AC Milan side of a decade ago, or the Barcelona side of the last decade have been built on great defences which often gets missed while being renowned for their entertaining style of football.

Look at Wenger's most successful Arsenal team and they had such a strong defence and midfield.

Defending is a lost art form because it's not as glamorous as running past 4 players and scoring from 30 yards. Even then, someone who puts in a last ditch sliding tackle is praised more than a defender being in the right position to prevent a pass into his area in the first place.

Being solid defensively doesn't mean that they are boring or can't be attacking. It's always about balance.
