Player power is too big, you can't blame a club for thinking about selling if a player kicks off or is nearing the end of their contract. There is no such thing as realistically keeping a player. At the end of the day football is about money and player power.

If a player wants to leave enough he will go.

This occurred around the same time Tadic was said to have had a bitter exchange with the Serbian national manager. It's a complete rehash from then. Tadic was even asked about it and he said it was all rubbish. Daily Fail making a mountain out of a molehill again. Honestly makes me think some journos take back handers to write stories to try to destabilise certain clubs. Because just when everything appears rosy at Southampton FC, some journo has to find something wrong.

Why doesn't this **** get written about Leicester City, or WHU, or Liverpool or any other ambitious and challenging club. Do they all have angels for staff and players.?

That's why what Krueger is doing is so important.

Continuing to treat 10-13m as an upper bound is not wise, IMO. Price will rise this summer; all of the Premier League is awash with money, and many will be targeting the same players. Now, we shouldn't be signing players for 50m either, but the playing field has shifted...spread 70m around signing 8 players and we aren't going to get a lot of high-end quality. It's also unnecessary financially: we're going to make an awful lot of money this upcoming season. There's no reason to handcuff ourselves by searching the bargain bin to replace four players who combined for 109 starts, 29 goals and 24 assists in the league.

Which isn't to say that we should set a minimum price, either; if you can adequately replace Mane for 5p and a slightly used plastic bag, you do it. But our transfer budget should, within reason, be what it takes to replace the departures and strengthen the squad, rather than just our intake from sales.

Yep. At the moment and for the next few years we will still be seen as a stepping stone for many players. We aren't a big club in London that can finish 7th and keep it's big players. London is a huge pull for players and Southampton isn't. We aren't a club getting into Europe season after season and competing for trophies. So despite Saints fans enjoying the direction we are going and finishing 6th. To a player who has a very short career, we are a decent club that pays quite well. We can't compete with the big clubs and that is a fact.

I agree about fees going up this summer, but I don't think it will change our overall strategy of shopping round the smaller European leagues. And for the selling clubs in these leagues £10m would still be a large sum for one of their players.

We as a club with our wage structure simply won't be able to attract already established top level players to replace outgoing ones, and obviously the less established ones play for the smaller clubs/will be cheaper.

And I'm not, that's why I haven't said anything about Pelle and Wanyama, whose contracts expire in a year. If they want out, it's more sensible to sell them. But Tadić and Mane have two more year sand the club is in a good position to fend off unsatisfactory offers. If the offer comes that outstrips the value that these two player have for us, then I wouldn't mind selling them either, but I don't think that kind of offer is coming this summer and that's why I say we can realistically keep them. At least for another year. They will go eventually, but they don't have to go this summer.

If Mane goes on strike and acts like he did at his last club he will leave.

£10m is a large sum, unless someone else is offering £15m. Every team in the PL can now offer eight-figure transfer fees without a bat of an eye.

Yeah, but again from memory, I don't recall us ever being in loads of competition for a signing from another PL club. Guess we either see stuff that others don't, or have some weird money ball type algorithm that rates players and other clubs haven't sussed it yet.

To think I thought this year would be different. <doh>

Still, it wouldn't be summer without all this stuff! :emoticon-0157-sun::emoticon-0157-sun::emoticon-0157-sun:

Not too bothered or surprised by any of that.

I think we all expected Pelle and Juanmi to leave. They weren't going to play all that much so it's best for both sides.

Wanyama hurts a little, but we knew this was coming and we have that position fairly well covered. I think we will miss his presence as when he was on his game he was great. But it's the last year of his contract, so it's probably best to sell anyway. If we need to bring in another DM, we can.

Tadic was sort of a rotation player for us and we will likely be looking to strengthen that spot. I can't blame him for hoping for greener pastures. But, I'm not sure anyone is going to come in for him.

Mane is the big one, but I think we all suspected this was coming. But I'm not sure he will get a big offer either. I think Man U is going to go all out and spend giant sums of money on players with a bigger reputation than him. I don't know if it works out, but they're not looking for upside potential, they're in win yesterday mode.

TLDR; it's not a big deal that players want to leave. And aside from Mane, none of these players is all that important to the side (which explains why they might want to leave). It will only be a big deal if they go on strike/force our hand in some way. That hasn't happened so far, and it may not happen.

We haven't really been signing unknowns; I don't mean that as a slight against the black box, just that we were getting in for players that many others seemed to covet from afar. We're already seeing mid-level teams in England recognize their purchasing power in Europe, though...Stoke spent £18m on Imbula, Palace spent £10m (and substantial wages) on Cabaye, Watford's net transfer spend was £55m, etc. And that was before the orgiastic spending that will occur this summer, when even the newly-promoted clubs will all have £50m+ to set on fire. If we didn't have competition for signings before, we will now.

Sort of rotation player who scored 7 and assisted 13 this season. He was directly involved in more goals than any of our players and in more goals than a lot of more coveted players in the league. He missed some matches (therefore your 'sort of rotation' remark) but he's clearly one of our most important players.

The disappointing thing if Mane and Tadic do both leave is that for me they are both starting to find their groove in the league.

Both have had two inconsistent season, but I was getting the impression that they were getting into what it takes and although our run in could of been described as a purple patch rather than a sign of consistency. It looked to me that they were starting to click.

Still I thought Mane was going to have a great season based on his finish to last season and it didn't really pan out

Doesn't Tadic have something like the third most assists in the league over the last two seasons? Only behind behind Fabregas and Ozil (I think?).
