makes for interesting reading and shows saints in a good light in terms of running a very tidy business! https://www.theguardian.com/footbal...gue-club-to-make-transfer-profit-in-past-year
I think I'm getting my seasons mixed up. The 2014/15 season we made massive profit on players? Did we make that much of a loss this season?
Well £4.8M is Charlie Austin, plus a tiny bit [£0.8M]. I'm not sure how Black Box planned Austin was. He may have been the closest the Liebherr Saints ever come to taking a punt on a player, but he will be worth the small loss, imo. It's not much in the great PL scheme of things.
But the article says "Tottenham Hotspur were the only top-flight club to make a profit from their transfer dealings over the last two windows." Ahhh pennies just dropped. Last two windows. Winter and summer. I read it as last two seasons in which case we'd be in profit on player sales. Oh and I agree about Austin. Worth it just for that goal at Old Trafford, but, I'm still confident he'll do well for us next season!
Interesting, but there are too many flaws in this analysis for any of the conclusions to be credible. For example, it ignores net transfer spending in previous years, plus it only looks at transfer fees and ignore wages and signing on bonuses.
Indeed. You can make statistics show pretty much anything you want. For example, 19 Premier League Clubs spent £4m less than Southampton on Charlie Austin
It is fairly narrow as it ignores all other spending, but I think it still makes for interesting reading.
Interesting. I know it's a crude figure but When I saw ours at a whopping 4.8m I must admit my first thought was not its great we run a tight ship it was if we had come out anywhere near the other medium sized clubs we would be in the champions league now. All I hindsight of course.
