Getting Stek permanently would be a nice start to the summer. A solid and - hopefully - simple bit of business. Ticks the backup keeper box and allows Les and co to focus on more important things.

 

And would give Stek confidence. He is the one member of the squad to play in a World Cup Final, so we know he's no mug. Like Kelvin, he's been through some bad times, but fundamentally he's a good keeper. We could be the club to bring those to a permanent end.

 

Is Davis just retiring or is he to be given a roll at Saints? I thought it was suggested a while ago that he might take up the roll of Goalkeeping coach.

It's frustrating all these stories with surprise that Koeman is not jumping at the chance to leave for Everton.

Did I miss something or did we finish above them the last 2 years. They don't have a massive number more fans than us. I wouldn't consider it a step up at present.

 

Many media outlets seem to think that Pelle is definitely on his way out of St Mary's this window. I can see where the odd rumour would come from but so many are reporting it fairly frequently. Is this just another case of ****e journalism or have I missed something?

 

I don't think there's anything concrete but it seems to have become accepted that Pelle's in a similar situation to Lambert a couple of years ago. He's probably not going to be first choice next year, may prefer to move on - probably back to Italy - and the club are likely to let him go.

 

Was speaking to a Man Utd supporting mate last night (Manchester born and bred, not one of these Man Utd loving southerners).

Says there are rumours that we have enquired about Phil Jones? Also that if LVG stays he is the one who is pushing for Mane, and there could be a swap involving Depay with the possibility of Jones being part of the deal so no money to change hands?

 

I can see that Pelle might want to move, but I would like to keep him. He is a proven EPL striker and unless we sign someone else we are left with Long and Mane (?) and two players with dodgy legs in Austin and JRod. We can't expect whole seasons from the last two. I'm sure we will sign another striker, but why not keep Pelle (though he may choose to leave rather than sign an extension).

 

I wouldn't hate it if he stayed but I don't think we generally play as well as a team with him on the pitch so I won't be concerned if he leaves and if he wants to go I can see us letting him leave. Lets not forget Pelle's knee is at least slightly dodgy as well. From what Beefy has said he's played through it at times over the last couple of seasons but it's definitely affected his performances.

Pelle's age is an issue as well as his contract and role. He will be 31 next season.

I think it's a choice between keeping Pelle one last year and letting him leave for free, or selling him and using that money to bring in a new striker who is hopefully younger and we can have under contract for 3-4 years.

I personally lean towards selling him, and I'd have to think I'd want a transfer as well were I in Pelle's shoes. But if for some reason Pelle understands his situation and still wants to stay, that's fine as well.

But I wouldn't give him an extension when it appears he is already past his physical peak at 30, and Saints would be paying him for his 32 and beyond seasons.
