Following in from Billy's thread, any players you rated but think didn't get the recognition they deserved? I'll start with two - although there are many. For me, Dennis Longhorn and Roy Greenwood were canny, Over to you. x
Sorry Flanders but I think we all thought that. I mean kind of obscure players - those that weren't great over a season, but genuine grafters at the trade who hung around and did some good stuff - Steve Agnew is ( I think IMHO) another. x
I was one of the best at the time, and that header against Chelsea (before they became Chelski) will never be forgotten Some stupid bastards (really stupid bastards) didn't rate me very highly, or appreciate my efforts, and they should all be shot p.s. this thread should be entitled 'Unsung heroes'
Gordon. How many games did you play? How many seasons were you there? Hardly unsung. I remember the songs. x
Dean Whitehead was mentioned earlier today on the crap players thread. He maybe wasn't the best player on earth but he ran around and worked hard and led by example. It strikes me as odd that he's remembered as being crap when the exact same description could be used for one of our current midfielders.
Ross Wallace just scored a goal for Wednesday in the play off. Cross missed by all went in the net always thought he was decent for us when we had him, nothing special but did a job for us
What I actually said in that thread was: "I want to say Dean Whitehead but he had a certain grim effectiveness I suppose. No talent whatsoever but busy enough so it wasn't too obvious." So unless you're claiming he was a talented footballer then we're pretty much in agreement. Although if you compare him to any of our current midfielders he would look absolute ****e.
Claudio Marangoni... I always thought he was on a different level to the rest of the side at the time, meaning that he never fit in with the style of play. He left us to go back to Argentina and became their player of the year..
Joe Bolton. First sending off I ever saw. Blackpool at home. Loads of niggling fouls from them. At the end Joe had had enough and just lamped the lad. On the local radio the commentator spoke about "a great right/left hook"! Won 2-1 IIRC (can't be bothered to look it up). I really am becoming a senile get, it was like it happened yesterday!
