Exactly this. Yeah net spend has been low la la la but he's covered huge losses and cleared huge debts whilst allowing continual, if wasted, investment. He will back Sam and Sam will get it right.
Fair enough point. So are we unanimous in saying thanks Ellis for two great wins this week and for keeping us up?
You could say that Ellis gets a pat on the back for recruiting Sam, which ultimately led to those 2 big wins. Yes. He's finally recruited the manager we need. As for the mismanagement over the last 5 seasons or so, that's at his door.
Fingers crossed mate. We've been here many times now. We had a false dawn with Advocaat last summer. This year, we've got a proven PL manager going into the summer. Next season is going to be different!
O.k., if you think the failures of Bruce, O'Neill, Poyet, and Advocaat were all foreseeable, fair enough.
Bruce wasn't a bad manager so it's not fair he's on the list, yes the salaries were daft but the team was almost there. Mon seemed a cracking move. Di Canio was very highly rated, and he kept us up. Advocaat kept us up, they all did. Mistakes have been made but none if the managerial appointments, for me, can be used against Ellis.
He doesn't deserve blame or credit, like any good owner he should be behind the scenes and providing the best support he can for your staff. How many times did the Glazers get credit for anything here? Owners became fashionable when Abramovic tipped up, it's not about them at all, most know absolutely **** all about football, relatively speaking.
Of course they weren't mate. But that's why the guys at the top earn the big bucks they do. They live and die by the decisions they make. I don't understand why you don't see that.
But then we are saying football isn't just business? The business is the clubs finances and dealings he has kept this club alive make no mistake. There's no queue over the Wear bridge to replace the man. I'm not saying he's perfect, I'm not denying errors have been made but we don't worry about doing a Leeds, we are in the Premier, and I tell you what, when changes have been needed as his appointments haven't worked out, he's been decisive. I'll wager you Norwuch and the Toon wished their owners had been as ruthless.
But if we'd gone down this season, we could have been a Leeds. It is a business and Short's running it like a business. And yes, he has kept us alive. Read back, I'm not attacking the guy. But running a sports company brings aspects to the business that don't fall in line with statutory accounting. And as for being decisive, he should have sacked Byrne years ago. The problem haven't been the manager, it's been the Executive.
I agree on that part. She was a disaster and a joke appointment from day dot. We wouldn't have done a Leeds, as he's a multi billionaire.
Well hopefully you've turned a corner now and by corner I don't mean that hairpin you guys seem to turn every season where you end up going backwards as soon as a new season starts. The football you play makes no odds to me but the same old chat is ****, imagine how many new topics we could have if you were in Europe or arguing with Liverpool over who's more likely to finish 8th
As billionaires go, he's small fry. But he's been playing by the those finance fair play rules crap, so he won't ever pump in more cash than he's allowed to. And it's the oversized wages that takes clubs over the edge. Leeds had 4 players on 2 mil a year that couldn't even get into the squad! 8 mil pissed away on the training ground.
Aye but the wages have been addressed and are largely in shape as of summer, a 'small fry' billionaire can easily cover a £100million deficit to protect an asset. We were never at risk of ruin, merely of falling further back from the teams ahead. What's certain is somebody needs to look at the contracts before they are signed off, we nearly lost Kone over terms but stuck to our guns, hopefully we have learned those lessons. Fortunately we survived, we lost £25million this year but with Fletch, Graham, Wes etc off the wage bill and £100 million extra projected income, quality recruitment and profit are plausible now. Ellis has been good for the club as a whole, no question. Drummaville were bust, we were ****ed.
This isn't a bad way to finish the thread. It's short, but sums it up for me. http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p03twt3g
I totally agree about Ellis being good for the club, but don't underestimate the perilous situation we'd have found ourselves in if we'd been relegated Nads. Ellis reflected his concerns months ago in one of his statements. And there's no way on earth he'd have bailed the club out had we ended up with a £100million deficit. He'd have restructured the clubs debt and sought a way out. As it is, it hasn't happened thank god and we can move on.
Don't get me wrong mate, I'm not naive enough to think we'd have shrugged off the loss, it would have set us back years. Doing a Leeds, no, we'd not have gone that far. We'd have been back to square one though, and by that I mean back 10 years and starting from scratch As a Premier League hopeful. I fully agree it would have been a complete disaster.
True but he's made his money as a venture capitalist - a risk taker in the business world he knows - does not have this knowledge in football yet, been badly advIsed and taken many wrong risks. He now has the right football savvy man in BSA - onwards I really feel the future is bright for us ( mind I've been waiting over 55 yrs with many false dawns so ..... must tread carefully
