Hi everyone. Just wondered if anyone else has been bombarded with offers for a free upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10? If so, have you taken the offer up and what's your verdict? I have read so many things about Windows 10 ranging from utter crap and no good whatsoever to easy upgrade and a much better system to operate. Microsoft and BT both recommend upgrading (but they would, wouldn't they?). I'm no computer whizz kid and would genuinely appreciate any views any of you may have. Thank you.
I havent upgraded. I dont know much about it and I like to think im ok with computers. So im no help for you this time. Sorry If you get no joy on here from other gasheads, maybe post this on the City board as they have a few guys over there that know their computer stuff
I have Windows 10 and it good. There are some tricks to stop being pestered by the constant push by Microsoft. Bear in mind the free upgrade period is soon to end then cost will go up to around £100. Look through computer actives past articles for good tips.
I upgraded and had one computer crash when I lost the Store facility which holds all of the apps. Probably an error on my part, but I lost all of my previous software programmes (Adobe Photoshop in particular which I can't reload because my CD is damaged (sod it!!)). But I have resurrected Windows 10 and have no further issues with it. There are some different features which take some getting used to. You will need to ensure that you know (and write down) any passwords if for example your email addresses are at present in Windows Live Mail. Whether it's better than XP, 7 or 8; I can't say now because I can't remember how good or bad the old versions were. I don't know your circumstances, so I'm not recommending any course of action. It's your choice whether to take the punt, but all I can say is; if you don't keep up to date, Microsoft can make life uncomfortable because they will at some stage stop supporting the earlier versions of software.
I took the free upgrade after talking to my son and the local computer shop who themselves had installed it on their computers. I had a couple of minor issues where the screen became enlarged and things were in the wrong place but that resolved itself and if the main screen does it now I switch off and then switch it back on and the problem has usually gone
I've upgraded its ok the only problem I've had so far is I've lost the Internet Explorer that is used with it (twice) its no biggy except I've lost the real player option to download videos from YouTube which is annoying My PC does start up quicker and shut down quicker. To be honest I haven't really checked it out properly I have downloaded an app so I can download tactics for Football Manager which seems to run quicker on Windows 10 I only really use my PC for my important memoirs and of course listening to music and coming on here and a bit of shopping I'm not a PC wiz or any other kind of wiz for that matter but will everyone have to download it eventually anyway as they will stop doing updates for Windows 7 and the rest? My little netbook I have is still XP and it informs me to upgrade it as downloads are no longer available for it?
I sometimes have to get a new box of chalk to use on my slate. We upgraded our windows a few years ago............Launa did an excellent job.
They stopped supporting windows XP while ago, won't be any use still using XP with no more security updates , I keep getting pestered with the download windows 10 icon but I'm not going to download it as I don't need it yet and my laptop I use is 5 years old so I don't know how it will perform with outdated hardware.
Thank you to everyone for your comments and thoughts etc. I think I will be brave and take the plunge this weekend and agree to the free upgrade to Windows 10. Its been very helpful hearing other people's experiences and like some of you have said, there will come a time when Windows 7 wont be supported or protected and then, purchasing Windows 10 will be the only option left, so will do it now for free!! Better do the last prediction game first just in case something goes horribly wrong!! thanks everyone again.
After the upgrade I needed help to get Outlook up and running and the Windows 8 version of Outlook has been redundant since I upgraded. I prefer Windows 8 to be honest . Windows 10 seems like a step backwards from what was a smart touchscreen software.
Well as i am an it person i suggest upgrading. If you have an older machine it will improve performance.
Ok then, I am on an old laptop. 2009 in fact. I have no issue with it hardware wise. I always download the updates it recommends. My laptop is windows vista. I havent had not one message about getting windows 10. I just looked at windows 10 and to get it on my laptop I need to BUY windows 8.1 and then update for free to windows 10. So my question is, do I need windows 10 if im on windows vista?
First off. Don't take my word for anything. Check it out for yourself. I did a bit of reading around your query. You could upgrade Vista to 7 or 8.1. If you upgrade to 8, then you need to do that with a DVD disc. They don't say you need a DVD for a 7 upgrade. 7 is available as an upgrade at under £20. Probably less if you look around. If you have access to one of the smaller independent folk, they will, probably, only be too pleased to get rid of one of their multi-licence packages and do the upgrade for you (Vista to 7 or 8 that is). Windows 10 seems to indicate that the free Upgrade is available for 7 or 8. If you upgrade to 10, 'Edge ' appears to super cede Internet Explorer. Hope this helps, but it is your call. Don't forget to note your e-mail passwords before you do anything as may need them to enter the accounts into the mail box. Good Luck
