Great post Syd. I left the north east last summer for the Auckland without the bishop.Good to see that the Hobbits, even report on the lads on their main news regularly down here and most games are on live. There are lots of locals here with UK connections and are SAFC supporters too so, I am doing my best in keeping them up to date with the news I pick up from here and elsewhere on the t'internet. My last game was Wolves away, last season and the last time I saw the lads live (sort of) was doing a Sweeney style chase of their team bus, cos I was lost in the Black Country and knew they were going my way! Will be heading back to the northern hemisphere later this year for a visit and will be planning a few trips to the Sol. I am looking forward to watching the Chelsea game here on Sky on Wednesday morning. All the best lads & lasses and here's to a great 2011!
I went to the centenary game at Roker Park in 1980 (?). Next to me was a man, about 60, very expensively dressed, and we got talking. Turns out he was a mining engineer who'd lived and worked in Peru for over 20 years. He had no relatives left in the area and this was the first time he'd been back to Sunderland in all those years. In fact, he'd only been back to England twice - the other time was in May, 1973. You can guess what for.
Hi Monkmaster - My second employer when I was a young lad of 18 was from Townsville (Queenslad, Oz, yes?). He taught me things like how to drink all night long how to play poker when pissed how to cook steak with gravy for breakfast the morning after A great fella with a right wild streak. His missus eventually barred him from getting me pissed more than once a week.
Syd, I really wish you hadn't put the picture of you and a morning glory in my mind, with that title.
Syd, as for your pic 'the cap fits' so to say. But maybe the lasses will reply if you take the cap off, only assuming, mind..... I need not tell my story as I've done it on 606. To cut a long story short, Dad was a Villa suppoter, Eldest is a Leeds, Other two siblings L'pool. Mother Port Vale, never know why? But I think she favours Sunderland more than anybody else.... Eldest tried to persuade me to follow Leeds, have to admit they were class in the 70's......my opinion. Uncle and Cousin staunch Manure supporters tried to get me to follow them, wasn't having any of it. Just went along with liking Sunderland from 76' till this day. Wasn't until I could drive, that I actually could get to the games. Mainly away matches. Originally from the midlands (Worcestershire) so being central was great for away games. Use to have a mate (Man Utd) fan who use to love going to the SOL, so when I made the trip from the midlands he would come along. Though I would prefer to stop overnight, I had to drive back the same day because his wife wouldn't let him stay out, talk about under the thumb. Moved to Cornwall which meant less chances of seeing matches and now living in Cape Town. Don't consider myself a supporter as debates go, but cut me and I bleed 'Red and White' S'land through and through, me.
Morning Syd, I grew up as a bairn going to games at Roker with me Dad, then when I was 11 started going with me mates. By 18 I joined the RAF and started to travel the world, but always with my Sunderland shirt. Now I'm working in California and the local Irish bar is the HQ for the California Man Utd supporters club. They meet every Saturday morning and I like to go in wearing the red & white just to piss them all off. It brings a smile to my face every weekend. It's nice that me Dad sends me a new shirt every Xmas, just wish he'd realize that I'm not little anymore, lol
