Hi, this is not a match thread, theresonlyonenumber7 has got that well in hand, this was more a look back at classic final home games of the season. There have been some memorable ones, just as i am typing i am thinking Walsall where we clinched league 1 promotion, Coventry where we gained championship promotion, both occasions on the pitch after the games. Villa last year 6-1 with the fastest ever premier league hatrick, the last game at the Dell and all those final last home games where we survived on that day. Sheffield Utd where Pearson just saved us from relegation to league 1 and the premier league survival battles that went to the last home game. Do you have any particular last home game favorite memories, interesting stories? Can Sundays match against Palace be one of those if we achieve our highest ever premier league position/points tally and know on the day if we have qualified for Europe. Without me doing a poll, list your favourite and we will see if there is a winner.
Discounting the promotion ones, off the top of my head, it must be the "great escape" of 1998/99, against Everton. It was the match that put little Marians into Saints folklore and he only just joined the club!... Enjoy!..
That was run of the mill. We used to do that every year in the 90s, more often with a draw to stay up )
Sheffield Utd was great because me and my boys had seats one in front the other right next to away fans (we were in Itchen North near the front). They still had an outside chance of a play off place, but their fans were brilliant with the banter between us, despite the tension. At the end of the game Saints and Sheffield Utd fans were shaking hands and wishing each other well - just how it should be. Fantastic game, fantastic atmosphere, real tension and great respect between fans. What more can you ask for?!
I couldn't get to this game myself. I was a nervous wreck. I remember being in Margate and listening to snippets on the radio. I love that radio do commentaries but it's horrible and teasing not being able to see what is going on at such an important time.
