Cameroon defender given tribute in last home game

Schalke defender Joel Matip during the German first division Bundesliga football match FC Schalke 04 v SV Darmstadt 98, on August 22, 2015 in Gelsenkirchen.

Liverpool-bound defender Joel Matip has been given an emotional farewell from Schalke fans at his last home game at the Velkins-Arena in Gelsenkirchen.

The 24-year-old defender will bring to an end a career stretching back 16 years when he moves to Anfield at the end of the season.

When the deal was announced in February Matip insisted that he would never have joined another Bundesliga club and was moving on for a different experience in his career.

Today the Schlake faithful displayed a huge banner which read: “For 16 years everything given for Schalke - thank you Jimmy”.

Matip’s nickname has been Jimmy for as long as anyone can remember but even old school friends can’t quite remember why. Possibly a play on his JM initials?

It wasn’t the perfect farewell for the German-born Cameroon international though in a match against Augsburg, a team who featured in Liverpool's Europa League run this year.

After Klaas-Jan Huntelaar had given Schalke an 80th minute lead on Saturday, a 90th minute equaliser from Augsburg’s Daniel Baier with a low shot spoiled Matip’s farewell. It ended the club's pursuit of a Champions League place with Borussia Monchengladbach now secure in fourth.

Matip has played almost 200 times for Schalke in the Bundesliga and another 46 times in the Champions League and Europa League.

The 6ft 4ins centre back has also played as a holding midfielder and his ball skills were evident recently with a stunning assist in the win over Hannover.

Alberto keen to repay Reds and work with the new boss

Luis Alberto

Jurgen Klopp has “changed everything” at Liverpool and it is something “you can feel” according to a Reds player who is keen to return to Anfield.

The lure of working with the Reds manager is one of the key factors in loan star Luis Alberto wishing to return to Merseyside.

The 23-year-old has spent this season on loan at Deportivo la Coruna and has managed a successful season which includes six goals and six assists.

The midfielder and his club are still fighting off relegation in La Liga but a point from the last two games will secure their future as they currently sit in 15th place.

But while Deportivo want to keep him, Alberto is very much attracted to the idea of a return to Anfield.

Groin injuries forced him back to Melwood for treatment in November when he got the chance to meet Klopp and his staff, and it’s a relationship he’s keen to foster.

“It is obvious that having Klopp as a manager is an extra motivation to return to Liverpool,” Alberto told IBTimes UK.

“When I was there I could see that he has changed everything, the atmosphere and the club. You can feel it. Everything I heard about him was good. He is transforming Liverpool. Of course I am very excited to work under him, trying to improve and stay in the squad to becoming into an important player for Liverpool.

“I spoke a bit with Klopp, but during the whole season I have been in contact with his staff to see how I am and to follow my evolution.

“Since the arrival of Klopp, the feeling has been positive, they have been in contact with me through one of his assistants and all we have spoken about has been positive.”

Alberto moved to Liverpool in 2013 from the Reds’ Europa League final opponents Sevilla

The 23-year old moved to Liverpool in the summer of 2013 from Sevilla for almost £7m but struggled to make an impact.

He started just two games, FA Cup ties against Notts County and Oldham, and was replaced at half time in the latter, while he made 10 appearances as a substitute.

He was sent on loan to Malaga last year before linking up at Deportivo this season with Victor Sanchez, who was an assistant at Sevilla during his time there.

Luis Alberto during a Liverpool FC training session
“I had some minor injury problems earlier in the season but it has been a good year. Thank God I have been able to establish myself in the top flights and play regularly, which was the most important.

“They (Deportivo) have already told me they want to continue, but I don’t know whether this will be a difficult or easy possibility.

“I have to go back to Liverpool and then let’s see what happens. Once the seasons start, Klopp will be the one to take the decision on whether I stay or not. I still have a year left in contract and the club will have to make the decision.

“It is obvious I would love to play in the Europa League and in the Champions League. But I have to wait. Liverpool paid €8m for when I was nobody. That was a big effort. It was a gamble and I have to thank them not only with words but with my football. I feel a little bit in debt with them for giving me the opportunity to play in a historic club.

“The chance to play for a club like Liverpool is not presented to you very often. My experience there was nice, I played with great players and we were almost champions of the Premier League. And playing for Liverpool is a challenge.”

Fair play, feels like he owes us after we forked out a lot of money for him. Not sure if he'll be able to step up into midfield in the prem or not but seems to have the right kind of attitude.

Nah Alberto is saying hey.... I'm not going to move unless it's right and I'm happy to be on loan until I get my free.... but he thinks he's done enough this year to not be said nobody.

have we got rid of tex yet? i had high hopes for him, so maybe he stands a chance to impress, i assume he will get same time to impress as markovic in pre season.

cant remember what his play was like, does he have a god football brain and able to move the ball quick enough? (yeah i know we have players who slow the fecker down lol)

Think that was with the Clubs consent, now? I think they both want to play in the Portugal Olympic teams, understandable to be honest.

meh... understandbale in the sense thye've no commitment to the club and have not been seen hardly at all.

Klopp needed a CB.. still does. no ilori.

Klopp has played ojo and ibe.. no teix.. again no contract talks either so clearly theres no commitment there.

Bascially thye've not done it and have failed. so... if they wanna go play Olympics they can but bye bye.

Ilori is still under contract, so could get a small fee for him..
Tex will leave on a free...
Depending on our recruitment, can see the likes of Ibe going (on loan maybe) and Markovic (sold, unless he pulls up trees in pre-season)..
Klopps getting his broom ready, there's gonna be quite a cull this summer!

There has to be.

Now i think klopp has seen first hand what he'd need to complete on all levels so if we get any europe next year (or CL fingers crossed) Ican see him dumping the league cup pretty quick with kids

I think you want 20 really solid players and the cohort of kids or "development players" who can come in and do the job. I don't think we have thta. You don't need 35 bored players.

I think the gaps in our squad have been obvious this year. We've played one up cos sturridge/ings were constantly injured and origi was coming i nso we not actually have 3 fit strikers but with the chosen 4-2-3-1 formation we actually only have 3 second line players. so the issue has been we cannot press really high all the time cos coutinho lallana and forimino can't do it. Milner has played CM. he might be no 4 i nthere. Ibe has been awful. so we've been playing mr ibe and mr ojo recent and the gulf is clear

Then we've loads of CBs, no LBs... rodgers... jesus wept.

The old/new adage, he wants 2 good players per position...
So far we only have..

GK
Mings + ? (Like what I've seen of Ward, but he's likely to get loaned out next season).

Defence
Clyne + ? (for me, I'd have Gomez has backup to Clyne, like Flanno for what he means to the club but he's not up to the standard we need to get to where we want)
Lovern + Gomez
Matip + ? (Assuming Sakho isn't suspended too long, if 2 years, he's gone and we buy another CB!)
Moreno + ? (Smith, he's a bit poor, this needs addressing)

Midfield
Can + Allen
Milner + Henderson
With the likes of Lucas, Branagan, Stewart and Pedro (Can see Hendo and/or Allen being sold, if so, they need to be replaced with much better players, Lucas may opt to leave if his playing time is going to be more limited, shame, been a great servant to the club, 3 young'ens will stay, like what I see of Branagan).

Attacking Midfeild
Lallana + Markovic
Coutinho + Ojo
Firmino + ?

Can add Ibe to that, but he may be gone in the summer, sold or on loan, same with Markovic, Ojo is one for the future..

Strikers
Sturridge + Ings
Origi + Benteke (Big question mark over Bentekkers, he's likely to be gone so that needs addressing, Ings as 3rd/4th choice is OK)

By my calculation, we need 5 quality players to the above to give us a decent squad, so we can bring in players and not have the standard drop!

For once I'm actually looking forward to the window opening, interested to see who Klopp brings in.

I'm confident with Klopp in charge <ok>

GK Agree
RB Agree
RCB: not so sure. Lovern yeah but gomez coming back is too big a risk
LCB: maybe.
LB: would not be shocked to see 2 new ones
CM: Can and milner... need two more, none of rest are up to much
Attack: Coutinho frimino and lallana but rest? nahhh needs 2 or even 3 here couts is a one in 3 or 4 type player
Strikers Origi, sturridge, benteke.. i don't buy the ings stuff here.. he might be seen as a wide man i dunno.. well filled slots

so for me.

He's probably 10 players short of a squad IMO

Thats a GK if not ward, RB reserve (perhaps gomez) an RCB, LCB if shako gone, 2 LBS, 2 CMS, 2 attacking midfielders

to get to a really top position we can't be playing the oh isn't joe allen a lovely fella card. How many times have we seen him completely blown off the park i na real big game. how many times has klopp actually picked him in a big game?

we need to face facts that a league cup and europa league final is a monumental achievement this year but its done at expense of league and we have 90mins to CL but 90mins to nowhere too. This is a multi year job and the genius that is harry redknapp told us... bang average mate.. never seen a worse LFC team.

for all:

Imagine horn, hector, matip, hummells, rues, gundogen and gotze at anfield next year... or would you rather lovern, flanno, allen, lallana and ings.... go on tell me the latter is best for us..

We won't see 10 new players this summer!!!

Over a few windows yes, but doing it in one is plain crazy.

Although I'd like Klopp to prove me wrong, too many changes is dangerous.

"Imagine horn, hector, matip, hummells, rues, gundogen and gotze at anfield next year"...

Matip on his way..
Horn and Hector are mooted as strong possibles..
Rues, no chance..
Gundogen has buggered up his knee, is out for 4/5 months, can't see anyone taking a punt on him this year, esp. given his previous injury issues, could be available on a free next season though.
Hummells is on his way to Bayern..
Gotze, could be a possible, esp. now that Dortmund have hinted that they don't see themselves making a move for him.

Klopp's done very little wrong since taking over, I trust he'll make the right decisions this summer!

Every year we list 10 players out and 10 players in like it would happen. What are the actual figures from previous summer windows of permanent ins and outs? And of those how many were starting 11 and became starting 11?

Too lazy to do it myself...maybe @moreinjuredthanowen will do it? <whistle>
