On the face of it, the one player that least needed a contract extension has signed one, but as magic said above, the extra TV money and our wish to compete at the top of the table means we have to pay wages more in keeping with what a player in a top 7 team would earn.

From rumours on wages two years ago, our top earners were getting 40k-50k a week and moving for double that. Believe Shaw signed 100k a week deal for example. We might not be able to compete with that, but we can get a lot closer. Especially with players who have proven their worth like VVD.

That is a good start for the rebuild and for the future. Now let's do the same with other stars.

This says a lot about Virgil's confidence in our future and warns other teams off.

Means little if we let Sadio and can't get Vic to re-sign.

Keeping our best players is key, Sadio and Wanyama are our key players!.. What message does that send out! I'm just irritated.

Tbh, I'd let Victor go. OK, I'd want big money [£20M+] for him, but I'd let him go because he's reasonably easily replaced. Besides, he's not mobile enough for me, when compared to Romeu. And also his attitude isn't the best, imo. Sadio I'd be disappointed about, but I won't even be surprised when he lines up for Saints next season.

Incidentally, VW tackled Wilfred Bony last week and bounced off. Bony didn't even flinch.

Now there's a positive spin. I'd like to take you sailing for emergencies. In a storm, one similar utterance and you'd literally take the wind out of the sails. <laugh>

Agreed. Vic going for decent money, fine. Sadio...less enthused about him going, and I think he's more "keepable".

I remember reading comments from Celtic fans that Virgil always seemed a bit moody and not very happy as a chappy.

Well, I haven't got that impression here. As noted by someone else, always seems chipper and happy in the training footage and seems to be enjoying life since swapping Glasgow for Hampshire.

    Understandable. :)

For goodness sake, everyone calm down. This means we're stuck with him now. Hell, when John Terry is sniffing around looking for a little Premier League club where he can end his career we may have to miss out. Worse news than this I struggle to imagine. (Am I getting this negativity/meltdown idea?)

Seriously, I had to watch the City game on the telly (hate that) and at the end my missus came in and saw Virgil coming off with Sadio. She asked who the big guy was. "That's Virgil, arguably the best signing we've ever made." "So is he going to Liverpool or United?" Cue sad resigned pout.

In light of the fact that, if you ain't a big boy, we see that even winning the EPL doesn't stop the vultures circling this is breathtaking news. I am still absorbing it. Off to North London with a spring in my step.

A friend of mine moved from Hampshire to Glasgow a couple of years ago. Statistically his life expectancy has dipped about 5 years.

He'd live longer by staying in Hampshire and becoming a smoker

The longer you live the longer you will live which is good news for me as it means I will probably live for ever.

I genuinely think Van Dijk is one of the best CB's around. I want him to stay at Southampton for the length of his contract, but I think in couple of years he'll play for a top club. And I'm not talking about top clubs like Arsenal or such, but more like Barca.

I know Glasgow has improved a lot over the years, especially since my first visit in the late 1970's, and it's not a huge distance from the beautiful wilds of Scotland, but their isn't a contest with Hampshire and surrounding areas. Leaning on the memory of my last visit to Glasgow, which was 10-12 years ago, for me the best picture of it is still in the rear view mirror..

    And the weather.? ;)
