Yeah, him being a left footer just tipped it for me. Wanted to balance the defence ( like it really matters ).
Oh my era (ie 1998 onwards): Niemi Dodd Svensson Richards Bridge Lallana Oakley Marsden Beattie Rasiak Pahars Smith, Lundekvam, Bale, Kachloul, Surman, Lambert, Crouch (choosing those two strikers for the bench was exceptionally tough, considering we've also had Phillips, Jones, John and Saganowski during this time).

how i forgot nick holmes ? so would put him in instead of steve williams, holmes probably most under rated player at southampton, great servant to the club
From my time (2003 onwards) Niemi Dodd - Killer - Claus - Bale Fernandes - Schneiderlin - Cork (kneejerk) - Lallana Beattie - Pahars
98 - 99 he was quite good still (though hardly outstanding), but he hardly kicked a ball after that. (I've just looked up that stats - 18 league appearance in 99-00, 8 in 00-01, and 4 in 01-02). In fact, from 1998 onwards he scored a grand total of 12 goals (league and cup). 12! In previously years he'd easily beat that in one season, let alone four combined.
I'd still put him in purely for the emotion of that left footed volley on a hot May afternoon in 2001
Just realizing that after watching the saints for over 40 years now they have had more than a few good players and choosing best ever 11 not as easy as you would think,, just remembered Martin Chivers who went to spurs for a then record fee
Ah Ozzie bless him ,saw him sit on the football in saints goal area and goad the Oxford fans wouldn't see that again in a match probably get fined for bringing game into disrepute , Mike Channon scored the winner with a beaut that night,,was sitting near oxford team bench and there coach jumped up after he scored and yelled "that's the one he does" so funny
