As an adjunct to Question 3. Which City player opened up a tobacco and sweet shop in George St during that season?

 

I'm guessing Billy Bly, although the sweetshop/tobacconist/newsagents shop he owned I remember was on Boothferry Rd almost opposite B.P. ?

 

Not Billy. Opened his shop after he finished playing in 1959.

 

Ooh, I'm usually rubbish at answering, but I'm fairly sure.

I'll be generous and assume that was an attempt at humour, and not something I'd said that had touched a nerve, but just in case, there's a bit of a clue on the first and last lines Trigger.

Now, if I'd tried to imply I invented it, or knew the answers....

 

He once said it was the most turbulent season in his whole football career. Easy to understand why.

-Injured at the start of the season then about a month later resigned as Player Manager due to board difficulties.
-Asked to keep away from the other players so trained at the Boulevard and played for a local amateur team.
- Massive local campaign saw him agree to return in December to play until the end of the season. At the time the season was going pear-shaped.
- First game back for the reserves drew 15,000(including me).
- Beat Manchester United away in the FA Cup to avenge the 1-0 defeat in the 6th round at BP in 1949.
- Kept City in Div 2 with the goal in their 1-0 win in the last match of the season away at Doncaster.
- This was his last match for City.

I thought it was the one and only Raich Carter, but my memory is not what it used to be.

 

That was my guess.

Obviously, the older one and only.

 

I think Carter had a newsagent shop on the corner of Perry Street and Anlaby Road (almost opposite the [old?] entrance to West Park near the end of the flyover).

 

Board difficulties? One way of describing it. Though not how the tabloids would nowadays.

 

I did struggle to find a phrase to cover it and opted for this one after long consideration!!

 

I remember reading on here an interview with Raich junior and a comment at the end said his dad had a sports ware franchise in the city centre.
