Different times and hard to compare the two. Remember the old European cup only used to feature the teams that won their respective league titles. Great achievement by Leicester though and congratulations to them - they've won it in style. First time we can say we've beaten the Premier League Champions (okay so it was only in the COC but so what?)
It is a completely mental achievement. Almost relegated except for an unprecedented run of wins then onto this? Bonkers. I genuinely don't think we'll ever see this kind of achievement again, the traditional top 4 will invest so heavily this Summer. Massive congratulations Leicester. Feel sorry for the Leicester City fan who cashed out at £72k about 2 months ago, more nerve and I dread to think what his 5000/1 pay out could have been!! Enjoy the shandies!!
Same from me. Back in the late fifties when I was studying at Hull Technical College in Park St. there was a Leicester fan in my year. I had a 5 quid bet with him that Hull City would be the English football champions before Leicester City! Lost contact with him a few years later but willing to pay my debt with inflation adjustment. For those that are saying the odds on me having to pay up are astronomically against, bear in mind that I lost contact with another poster on here in 1956 and met up again with him via this forum 56 years later. My wife who was on here at the time read a random post about the time he spent at Riley High where we were classmates for 6 years.
Similar experience for me Mr B_M_B, but it was only a gap of 48 years. The last 3 years we've managed to get to 2 or 3 City games together on my visits back home. Similar connection was relating to the school we both attended and just by random chance I had spotted an announcement on the net of a school reunion. Wonders of technology.
Brilliant season lads. You fully deserved to be Champions. Played exciting football the right way all season. Great GKing and CHs...creative MF...speed and amazing accuracy up front. I've looked forward to watching every one of your games on TV here in Canada. Hope you do well in Europe and defend your title next year. Really happy for all the Leicester team and supporters. !!!
Although we have since been in regular email contact, endlessly reminisced the old school days and covered the intervening years in great detail, we have yet to meet up. With my sister and other relatives living in Hull and he staying in a village just outside for 6 months of the year it should have happened by now- but I am working on it!
When I was 'on the road' in the 60's I had Leicester on my schedule for a while and watched them play at their old Filbert Street Ground. Different sort of support when compared to the North East, Liverpool and Manchester. There was an air of aloofness about them that I didn't experience anywhere else. I left there one Friday just prior to the FA Cup Final and there was a HUGE sign on the station platform welcoming "Leicester City FA Cup Winners" but they got beat 3-1 in the Final by Manchester United. From 5,000-1 rank outsiders at the seasons start they have done remarkably well and what a really nice guy Ranieri is. Hats off to all of them concerned.
Team, team spirit and great manager. I wish we had that - but did our team spirit depart when we got rid of Macca, Boyd, Rosie and Quinny?
If you all pull together good things happen. Allams take note, Brilliant for 95% of the football league. If I was an owner of the "big" teams I would be speaking to my Manager with some stinging questions starting with "well what did you do with my money this year"
The blame rests fairly with Steve Bruce. Underperformed last year to the point where we went down only managing to take one point of what was a **** team. Holidaying in Barbados with his mate Shearer thinking we were safe. ****ing amateur.
Apart from the obvious achievement given the comparative size of budget/cost of players, the main plus point for me has been the sheer enthusiasm and freedom with which Leicester have played. We got somewhere near to this (relatively!!) in the first 3 months of our debut Premier League season but we know how that ended. Well done to Leicester for giving us all hope.
