You must be from Welsh Wales. I spent my years in Cardiff....virtually no one spoke Welsh there. Like Welsh Cockneys there.
Ah man. Just watched that. Fabulous and I love the way they finished on Ossie and Bobby. So sad those two weren't around for this weekend. I worked with Ossie for a year. He was my coach and the one lasting memory I have of him is that he was just a fun bloke, who loved life. That video just re-enforced that view for me and how much he meant to the other players. RIP Ossie & Bobby. *wipes several tears*
What an honour to have such a player (and bloke) as Ossie for a coach. Never met him, but was always struck by how he always really enjoyed life and lived it to the full. My first memory of him as a player was the "infamous" 1970 cup final vs Leeds where he scored a brilliant diving header for Chelsea, so when he came to Saints I was made up. Then I remember him having an amazing game in October 74 when we stuffed Derby County (who, if I remember correctly, were flying high at the time led by Cloughie) 5 - 0 at home in the League Cup. Great player - taken, like Bobby, way too early
I never realised that this phenomenon existed until about 30 years ago when I met a mate's new girlfriend. She grew up in darkest Carmarthenshire and only started learning English when she went to school. I'm sure there are more people like yourself Helen than us English realise.
I'm from Carmarthenshire too but "learned" both Welsh and English equally. I do remember an old woman in the town who couldn't speak English at all, even though she was punished when growing up for only speaking Welsh - the dark days of the language and people
So, you were the other Saints fan, apart from myself, who was overjoyed that Peter Osgood signed for us. I knew there couldn't be just the one.
Well it was a really good evening. The format was to introduce each player, show some of their highlights and then interview them. The running gag about the goal being offside went down well, with filmed contributions from amongst others SAF, Bobby Charlton, and Roy Hodgson. James Beattie was there as well as Clive Thomas and Tommy Doc, who was very complimentary about our team. I spoke to him briefly after and Lawrie and the pair of them were really quite sentimental. The whole evening was really well judged, just the right tone and length. The only slight downside being the state of my head this morning. I went straight from the match and red wine on an empty stomach is not a great idea!
