See if anyone can guess: Basingstoke Town (2015) Havant & Waterlooville (2015) Eastleigh (2013) Basingstoke Town (2012) Farnborough (2011) Farnborough (2009) Fleet Town (2008) Eastleigh (2008) Southampton (2007) Havant & Waterlooville (2007) Farnborough Town (2006) Aldershot Town (2005) Aldershot Town (2004)
My guess is it would have something to do with end of season stuff like play offs. They didn't win them looking at the Southampton date.
Sensiblegreeny and devon are correct. Those are all Hampshire teams that have participated in the play-offs but in every case they lost. Sometimes in the final, sometimes in the semi-final. So as you can see Hampshire teams get into the play-offs fairly regularly... But every time without fail they do not win promotion. How is it that 8 different teams over the course of 14 years all fail to win promotion through the play-offs? It just seems so unlikely... So the fact that we're in the play-offs doesn't make me feel that reassured.... But can we end the Hampshire curse?
Thought all you pompey folk would remember 2007. Best with an outrageous own goal, & Pele with the 20 yard tuck back penalty. Derby went on to gain promotion........then become the worst ever top flight team. Two years later and we were in L1. Funny ol' game.
It's ok HistoryRepeating you managed to become the worst one eventually. Everything comes to he who waits. For the record we have been in the playoffs 3 times before. We were once 15 points clear of the team that beat us to get to Wembley the first time. We got there the second time and won it. We failed last year to get anywhere so that's 2 out of 3 fails.
I can understand you not being interested in the elite league in the country, possibly in europe Greeny, but "worst teams" generally get relegated, not finish in the top ten for 3 seasons in a row...
Hold the phone, let's apply a little basic maths to this. I don't know all the rules for the various leagues but surely the plays-offs are usually 4 teams competing for 1 place in the higher league? In that case the success ratio above doesn't look that extraordinary.
Indeed, but surely out of 13 play-off participants from Hampshire, you'd have thought at least one would have gone up through the play-offs. Even in play-offs where there have been two Hampshire teams in (i.e. last year) where there's a 50% chance of going up... of course neither team did. If there's a roughly 25% chance of any given team winning in the play-offs, from the above list, Hampshire teams should have gained promotion about 3 or 4 times out of the 13, statistically speaking. If you get promotion to the premiership does that automatically come with a sense of humour bypass and instructions on how to stick you head up your arse? Or is it just a location thing.....
The only previous time Pompey Have been in Play-Off action was in 1993. Pompey finished 3rd in Division One [Championship] and missed out on automatic promotion to the Premier League by ONE GOAL to West Ham. We lost 3-2 on Aggregate to Leicester
Lapras, that particular "character" was always a pathetic troll on the old BBC 606 site. He hasn't changed one iota.
