Re Leicester, to apparently win this at a canter, is mind boggling and as good as some suggestions are, in such a rich league this hasn't and maybe will not be surpassed. Oh unless they win champions league next year, yeh we said they would crack in premiership lol
Kept his head and team together in the build up and would not be influenced by anybody. Two full backs an (Wilson and Cohen) and a midfielder (Ball) from the second division. Am I right in thinking that Syd Collins, then a Sunderland director, was head of the selection committee around that time?
And that's a damn good point you made about second division players mate. At one time it was taboo to pick anybody outside the first division. I think the only one picked for England during Ramsey's playing career was Eckersley of Blackburn Rovers, and he got picked specifically on Stanley Matthews' recommendation. Ramsey didn't give a monkeys who you played for - if you were good enough, he'd pick you. Not sure about Syd Collings. He might have been. There was all sorts on there, including a Middlesbrough greengrocer! And these guys were deciding how good Ramsey and Shackleton were - a bloody madhouse.
New York Mets win the World Series. Senegal beat France 1-0 in the very first game of the event (I think ) in the 2002 World Cup
Stuart Pearce looking like a right dope, shortly after kick-off against San Marino in November, 1993 was blinking funny
Individual event: Rosol defeating Rafael Nadal at Wimbledon Slightly more impressive: Notting Forest Champions League and Greece Euro's are hard to split. Undisputed greatest sporting achievement of all time: Leicester are 3 points away from it
Cassius Clay beats Sonny Liston in 64 ....listening on the radio with my mom and dad ....even as a boy , you could tell something big was happening . Was the talk of the town at the time .
Argentina 0-1 Cameroon at Italia 90 was a big one. Argentina were champs with Maradona, and at the time African football was ****house.
Chelsea having such a **** season. Not a major one but definetly a suprise. Most peoples favourites the finish first or second.
Yes, and boxing needed him. After a series of 'easy' opponents arranged for Floyd Patterson, and the Mafia connections of Sonny Liston, boxing was on its knees. In the States, the boxing halls were emptying, and without the 'live' atmosphere, t.v. dropped Friday Fight Live. And then this big mouthed kid came along claiming to be "The Greatest". Crowds started to come back, probably to see him get a hiding. But he didn't. After the Cleveland Williams fight in '66, people were beginning to think this kid might just be what he said! A similar thing happened in baseball in 1913 when bribes were rife. The stadiums drew smaller and smaller crowds.- until this big, brash kid came along. "And what are they waiting to see? - Hit a home run, Babe". Don't know about anybody else but I enjoyed this documentary ... EDIT ; I said 1913. It should be 1919. Apologies.
Nope it was nearly always Bluto, but for some reason in the later years of the cartoon they changed his name to Brutus..
