Time to put it to bed now.......very sad but unfortunately with the way football fans (particularly away fans) were treated in those days a disaster was bound to happen.

Blistering speech by Andy Burnham in the Commons today. Saying the cover-up went right to the top - 'to the committee rooms of this House and the press office of number 10'.

Don't forget Strolls that all the information given out was supplied by the Police.........if you listen to John Motson's commentary on the incident he stated on air that the reason for the crush was because a gate gave way allowing thousands of fans to flood that end of the ground.......now as he was high up on an gantry how did he get that info? Could only come from one source........

Just watched a clip on the BBC Website with Kelvin McKenzie (editor of the Sun at the time) saying that the 'newspaper' was duped. Well f**k me you twat, your job is to report the NEWS, not repeat what you have been told. It's called investigative journalism. This rag of a newspaper hasn't even put the news on it's front page. Paper full of tits, run by tits!

Sure it came from the police, but there was collusion from other areas of the 'establishment.'

Actually quite disgusting if he's trying to make political mileage out of this.

FFS Chaz - he's not. He actually went out of his way to praise Teresa May.

I'll take a lot of convincing there was collusion from establishment. If the police decide to fabricate facts to support a false explanation of events and hide their own culpability, leading to perjury in later court cases, I just don't see members of government or government apparatus saying "Fair enough, we'll go along with that." Why would they? If the South Yorkshire police had held their hand up immediately, government would not have fallen or even rocked.

Have a read about Bernard Ingham, Thatcher's press secretary at the time and his comments regarding Hillsborough. He still believes the original and maintained police version apparently. It might not have been active collusion, but people declined to ask searching questions because it suited their view of the world to believe the police rather than football fans, or 'tanked up yobs' as Ingham describes us.

They didn't put their hand up though did they? Don't you think that there might have been collusion at a later date to avoid the damaging truth coming out? I was going to mention Bernard Ingham, but I see Stan has already done so. The story suited Thatcher's view of football fans.

What is disturbing is that the Taylor Inquiry didn't uncover the Police deception, unless off course it wasn't part of its remit.......if it wasn't was exactly was the purpose of Taylor?

Yep but Thatcher has been out of office since the early 90's yet the lie of the Police was still maintained through Major, Blair, Brown etc....

There have been numerous enquiries and inquests through these administrations, but none could get to the truth until now. The original Coroner said that no evidence was relevant after 3.15 that afternoon.

I've read Ingham. He believed the police and had a jaundiced view of the Liverpool fans, perhaps all football fans. I've seen no evidence that he colluded with dishonest coppers, which assumes that he knew the truth and ignored it for whatever reason

I think there's an arrogance with Ingham. If he has to choose between Liverpool Football fans or the South Yorkshire police (particularly since I think he's a Yorkshire man himself), he'll go with the police. I don't think it's sinister

Maybe a lot of the establishment views were biased because as most of us know football was riddled with hooliganism in the late 80's and why would anyone doubt what the Police were saying.......thankfully we now live in more enlightened times......it is disgraceful that the lie was allowed to go on unquestioned for so long......

Just heard on the radio that the Chef Constable of South Yorkshire Police has been suspended.......

It is odd that even now he can't bring himself to apologise for following his prejudices.
