I've noticed he's scored a couple of freekicks now. It strikes me as a little odd for our freekicks in friendlies to be taken by a reserve team player when we should be letting the first team free kick taker be getting the practice in in a match situation to get their eye back in for the start of the season. So am I reading too much into it, or should we expect him to start?

Having only checked the teamsheet for the Bradford game the alternative if there's anything to be read into it is that this could be confirmation that Dudgeon will start as first choice left back. Dawson was on the pitch when Cairney scored the freekick, and he's been our regular left footed freekick taker for quite a few years but didn't take this one.

Cairney scored a free kick against Norwich when he was one of our better players early last season, when playing he should probably be our first choice taker ahead of Dawson. I know Daws has scored a fair few crackers in his time but his range and placement is limited, the ball has to be in the exact right place, practically to the inch, for him to score. Cairney seems to be able to bang them in more frequently and I would therefore nominate him ahead of Daws.

I know we've only played lower league opposition but I reckon with the way Cairney has been playing he'll start alongside McKenna or Evans on August 5th.

I dont think he will be a reserve player this season. I think given a change in attitude from a big time charlie he may very well be starting.

NP's already said he's in contention to start against Blackpool.

Tc also took the corners against Bradford rather than Dawson.

Hope Cairney starts from what we've seen pre-season, think he's played himself into the team.

One thing does concern me about his free-kicks is the positioning of his body. Take this picture on the HDM (sorry I don't know how to post images, if the link doesn'w work, go to the HDM website and look for the pictures of the Bradford game, it's the 10th picture)

What concerns me is how twisted his standing foot is. Surely contorting the ankle like that can't be good for the joint?

That said, I did used to think the same whenever I watched David Beckham take free-kicks. Perhaps the technique could be a good sign then with young Tom!
