Jon Snow must die so that his watch is over. He is loyal to his nightwatch oath so the boy must die so that the man can be born. He's a man of his word so if he had left the night watch he wouldn't be able to rally the north as he'd be a deserter and would be executed because the north respect that 'law is law' as we see in the very first episode. By dying he is freed from his watch and can rise as Jon Stark-Tageryen (if my theory from reading the books is correct).
