Lots of top players want £££££, they use CL as an excuse, UTD can pull in big name players by offering huge wages.
The Spuds would not be able to compete with UTD even with CL football

If Spurs are going from strength to strength (as it seems) then the perfect progression would be the experience of a trophy winning campaign. That would go much further towards building a strong, successful side that establishes itself, than finishing 2nd.

  5. We don't want to compete with United; we want to be much, much better than that.

United are more at the level of Chelsea and 'Pool, now.
    <ok>

The top players will come to us because they want real success.

    Indeed such players do.
But if you are in the CL you at least have an opportunity to filter potential incoming
mercs who are using that excuse.

You really don't. This is the kind of naive stuff some Spurs fans are coming out with. Being in the CL attracts even more mercs.

    You do.

We got VDV because of CL football (his wages were a lot less than he was on at Madrid) .

And we had Hazard being a wage slut in the press in 2012 talking up how he would consider
Spurs etc, in the period when it looked like a CL slot was guaranteed.

Any big signing who may come to Spurs in the summer is not doing so for the lure of big wages
if the usual CL-bound suspects are also interested.

But that doesn't mean they're not mercs.

You've used a couple of examples limited to your club's experiences. Much better examples are those at City before and after they qualified for the CL - the mercs didn't stop coming.

That last sentence is also naive. Big signings WILL come to you for the big wages because you'll be competing with far more established CL clubs who will also be going for them. It's not as simple as you all imagine tbph.

Such players can come to Spurs for BETTER wages than they might currently be getting, but those
wages are far from "big" . If the usual suspects have CL too, then they can outbid Spurs on wages.
And if so desired/possible, such players can use the 'Club X are more likely to win <insert silverware>
    than Spurs' excuse.

Yeh agree. But at that point Spurs have a decision to make. If they want to move to the next level (which is what we're talking about) and they see such big name players as a part of that jigsaw, do you then offer higher wages to lure such players at the club (above Club X) which once again comes down to money. This is the position City have faced and which Chelsea had to deal with before them.
