Where would you want me to start re Leeds United, Norman Hunter deliberately broke Bobby Kerr's leg in the late sixties when he was 17 ish and just starting out on his career, they then cheated their way past us in an FA cup tie which went to a second replay at Hull in which they stole the game with a seriously dodgy penalty in the last minute which resulted in George Herd and George Mulhall being sent off in the last minute as they moaned about the refs decision, I thought our cup final win in 73 was pay back time big style.

I know it's a strange thing to say. But I've enjoyed this thread.

Is it not worth just rebranding this the nostalgia thread, a place for everybody who enjoys chatting about the 'good old days' and others like your good self who enjoy reading it.

But like Gen Chat but for historical SAFC stuff.

You have my word I won't ruin it, it's guaranteed to be a big thread and you can keep going back to it rather than losing it all in hundreds of different threads.

Here's a question for you all.

73 cup final. Just what was the gulf in class between these two?

I was 13. But I still remember how we hadnt got a hope in hell. We were cannon fodder for the best team in the country back then.

The pundits probably had Leeds winning by 4 or 5!

It would have been the most one-sided final in decades!

But we led the the way for other second teams who got to the final!!

I was fortunate to get a ticket in 73 at the last minute. I don't think in general that there was as big a gulf between the top 4 of the 1st division and those near the top of division 2. The financial gulf was more English Channel rather than Atlantic.
That final was without doubt one of life's memories. We were standing next to a black cab driver who was a Mackem and he had us back on Oxford Street before anyone else, no one would believe we won. Back home the following morning I bought every newspaper on the stand, great.

Staying with the Leeds moan, I think that it was their manager Revie who, for you younger lads, played for us for a short time and he introduced "professionalism" to describe was what nothing but cheating or gamesmanship. Any decision no matter how minor, given against them and they would surround the ref just to slow or stop the opposition from getting on with the game. Same with throw ins even.

Their goalie Gary Sprake revealed some of the dressing room goings on that Revie and players worked out and is now banned from Elland Road.

Sorry with the late response, that's the trouble with retirement, you never get a day off.........Cloughie wouldn't last 5 minutes in today's game,.... He was a lazy buggar. He wouldn't go looking for the ball, he told his team mates it was their job to give him the ball and his job to score goals. That was something he did very well. I was at the game where he was injured, was it against Bury? He was still in the top scorers list at the end of the season, after missing half of it. Shows how many he scored.
Leeds United, where do you start....They had so many players who would just as soon play the man, instead of the ball. They got lots of success by intimidation alone, frighten the opposition into making mistakes. But the 73 final was something I'll never forget. Was watching it at my old mans house, with the then wife. When we scored me and the old man jumped up, beer everywhere, on the ceiling on the walls. Fantastic for a few minutes til the wife reminded us that my sister had only just finished redecorating the room, oops!
There was a little general dealers just over the road from the Fullwell end, and my aunt lived upstairs from there. That as where I got my first taste of the roker roar.
This thread is definitely a good read, brings back some memories through the fog of time. Cheers.

Started going to Roker Park mid 60's but my biggest memory of that time was walking into the local store in Cleadon Village and standing next to George Herd buying bottles of Newcastle Brown Ale. Was very chatty to everyone in the store and seemed a great guy. I remember how surprised how small he was. I think he later after his spell with Sunderland opened a car dealership.....memories....lol

I was at the Hull replay and am ashamed to say took part in the pitch invasion in protest at the useless t--t of a referee, the confrontations with Leeds were always fractious and the dirty play encouraged by the nastiest manager that ever drew breath, if ever anybody brought the game into disrepute it was him, of course the useless FA chose to reward the rat with the England managers job which he walked out on for a few more quid in the middle east.

It was pretty good at Wembley that day as well I can tell you the night in London following the game was magic, everybody in the pubs wanted to congratulate us on the win which seemed to thrill the neutrals almost as much as us. George Herd used to call into the Fry-Fry in Bridge Street almost every Saturday night about the same time as I did, he was always a friendly sort, no edge, but you could say that about most footballers in those days. I think Old Big Head would still cut the mustard even to-day, he was a natural finisher, one of the best ever imo. I think that little general dealers is where I got to on the night of the Man U game mentioned earlier, they have all been converted into accomodation now those old corner
shops arround what used to be the real theatre of dreams, mine anyway and sometimes 65,000 others.
