He isn't a top level defender though, he's a below average (for the PL) defender with top level athleticism He has no brain or reading of the game and his best play comes when he can use his pace to mask his mistakes. That doesn't work against top players like Sturridge who also have pace, and it means he could be useless in the future if he doesn't learn improve his appalling positioning.

Yes in some instances Gerrard was a thug However he also had that in context of many many years of top level football Funes Mori has only just turned up and he's already racked up thuggish behaviour greater than the worst of Gerrard, with nothing else in his career to balance it out
