The games that stand out in my memory are the cup games against Arsenal 2-1 then Spurs 1-1 who won the replay and the battle with Chelsea when they beat us one nil after we battered them for the whole game, the goal was scored from a corner by the smallest player on the field it was one of those games, all three mentioned had huge crowds 65,000 but it seemed like more, the famous Man U night game when the gates went in, I have never seen as many people the crush started in Gladstone Street making my way from the Wheatsheaf, I got as far as the corner of Hampden Rd and Sandringham Rd just as the police closed the ground, my uncle lost his shoes when the gates gave way, and he reconed hundreds watched the game in their stocking feet. The tannoy announcement that the shoes were layed out on tables under the clock stand caused panic as everybody just rushed down and put the first pair on that fit, he ended up with odd shoes like everyone else, I walked back to the town center and as it was a still night you could here the crowd noise from Hylton Rd a truly remarkable night that one. Overfield as I have mentioned before was one of the worst players I have seen in a Sunderland shirt, he made Jesus Navas look a world beater, Cloughie was my all time favourite, not just for the goals and the rate at which he scored them, his on pitch personality matched his off field persona he was a one off if ever there was one, great days.
My first game was Leicester in 64-65 3-3 with Derek Foster MO'M Remember straw round edge of pitch thrown in air after goal, "peanuts tanner a bag " from peanuts seller , echoing chants of "Charlie " around ground - and the magic of the amenity limited ground - ooh flooded toilet blocks- wellies needed - lol
Yeah those toilets were an experience, I think I only ever went in once, but some of those in the workplace were not all that special either tbh.
It is Cec Irwin not Irvin and it was special cause I'm sure it was the only goal he,ever scored for the first team and it was from a colossal distance.
You had to have a special affection for Cec a bit like the Monty Panesar phenomenom a few years back, no particular reason just a fact. It might have been that not many footballers were called Cecil, or that he was a highly rated player at youth level who while wholehearted never really lived up to his billing, however he played a lot of games for us under Alan Brown who seemed to play the same team for years hoping that they would improve eventually, and slowly building teams buying one good player every year. It was a strategy that required a lot of faith and patience and I actually enjoyed my football better in those days when success was not the be all and end all like it is today.
Ces cross shot from near the wing on the right half way line.the wind got hold of it and it bent around the keeper into the net
I know spell checker not good And Cec was one of my favourites of that era It was his only goal He had been with Sunderland as a school Boy Scout pick up.
I saw Cecil play for us, and I believe it was Super Dick Malone who took over his mantle at right fullback and I think he might have just scored one or perhaps two goals for us as in all the time he played too..
It would have went out for a throw in on the other side of the pitch if it wasn't for the wind. To be honest it was a f*cking crap shot but a cracking goal.
Remember 6'2 Eyes of Blue Tricky Dick chant - along with Joe Joe Joe Bolton - proper iconic wholehearted (limited maybe) fullbacks - along with that Pole (not spelling as would be a spellcheck nightmare - lol)
Thanks - saved my 's and revived more memories - Roly Gregoire - talented but walked on banana skins if I recall
Almost certain Overfield was signed from Leeds. A poor player who when he had his moments could be quite tricky. Deadly slow though.
My memory says Leeds United, he was totally useless, another goalscorer in the mould of danny Graham and countless others, I think he notched up two goals, both in the same game, shame the never managed a hat-trick it would have been quite a feat. Speaking of McPheat , he came through with Nick Sharkey and might have had a similar career as Nick if it wasnt for the aforementioned Leeds United, what a bunch of thugs Revie encouraged at that abominable club.
