A country like Ireland which was one of the most Catholic countries in Europe till a decade ago voted gay marriage in recently with a healthy majority taking into account all the old ones who voted No. Are you saying a similar referendum in the UK would fail and that gay people would vote against it?
Was it gay people or Irish people in general? I think people in general would vote it in, as they see it as the ''right thing to do''. often this is due to being PC or media coverage of campaigns or whatever I am speaking of people from LGBT communities. Here the majority see the rights of gay couples being the priority not necessarily marriage. Polls are a bit crappy overall but even before it became Legal in England some polls suggested it was only 27% of gay people polled wanted marriage, most wated legal rights and many felt civil partnership was not only unique to that community but also was sufficient In a weird way marriage votes by non gay people was about ''making them like us'' which is the true discrimination ie they are to be made ''normal'' and many gay groups and gay rights activists said this (not that you heard may once Cameron got on the lets make it legal band wagon) Also it may surprise you to know that the ones pushing for gay marriage from LGBT communities, eg Peter Thatchell (sp), were about mischief making rather than rights. Once legal they wanted to take religious institutions to task (through human rights courts etc) for conducting the ceremonies. In fact I think it has already begun even though the govt tried to build into the law that religious institutions couldnt be forced
