A couple of glaring omissions if you ask me... To celebrate our announcement of Principal Partner to Hull City of Culture 2017, we took to the streets of Hull to hear about Hull’s favourite nightclubs of the past. From The Locarno to Room, each venue has a story to tell. http://www.heytoday.co.uk/kc-culture/hulls-top-ten-clubs-of-the-past/
Guilty, a real shame it was so short-lived - I seem to recall it had some kind of covenant that prevented the owners getting a drinks licence? Had my one and only ''fungal experience'' in there.
Back to the proper theme....I can remember a group of us coming back from some third division game, say Wigan or Rochdale or Bury, that neck of the woods in the 90's. When the coach got back into Hull we ended up in Tower, only for an hour of course....... We must have won because I can remember us being dragged out by the bouncers for being in the middle of the dancefloor singing Hull City songs louder than the music the DJ was pumping out. Now that was singing.....
The Room was a decent venue I thought, was never so keen on Welly, Welly has more of a history too it though. I liked Fez Club before they turned it into Heaven and Hell, been shut for ages that place. Circus Circus still got the BOGOFF signs up front years after it closed, remember the horrid cocktails in there before going to LA's. Wouldn't dare go clubbing in Hull these days, too old
Has to be No 1. A unique, if failed, experiment. Could really have developed into something. Shame it was so short lived. Has there been anything similar since? sss... who needed drinks?
Baker Street behind central library opposite the bogs. In an old chapel now demolished I think. I think it only lasted about a year and a half. 71-72 ish? Never changed it;s name to my recollection. Operated and managed by local promoter Barry Nettleton later of Hull Truck and Beverly Folk Festival. He died back in 08. please log in to view this image Tributes paid to influential promoter http://www.hulldailymail.co.uk/Tributes-paid-influential-promoter/story-11965217-detail/story.html
It hosted some memorable gigs in its short life, I remember seeing Hawkwind , Stray and Arthur Brown there. Quite often bands would use it as a practice room during the day ,I recall Nothingeverhappens and Quiver turning up for impromptu sessions.
I saw haircut 100 in tower an awful long time ago... "Love plus one", "fantastic day" ...Nick Heyward...
hawkwind, stray and arthur brown. paul rogers peace, graham bond, andy fraser,s toby. genesis.p.orrige [****] with ray harvey on drums. i believe barry nettleton had a partner in brickhouse called rick welton ? hence the name b rick house
+ Quintessence, Vinegar Joe... Alex Harvey Band??? and of course Snips:- please log in to view this image Solo and with Nothingeverhappens as desfrog mentioned above. Seemed to play every local gig going around that time. And went on to bigger things. Sod it, lets have a song. Anyone know what became of Snips. I noticed an unsubstantiated mention of his demise.
