It's a pointless argument because it's a team game. The performance of any individual is only relevant in a team context. Defenders in particular rely on the contributions of teammates. The best defences work as a unit. Leicester have defended well collectively (especially in recent weeks), so have Spurs. I think Leicester's defenders are more active in that the opposition often have more of the ball and they employ the tactic of soaking up pressure before looking to break quickly when possession is regained whereas Spurs look to retain the ball and the press higher up the pitch when possession is lost. Leicester's centre backs read the game well and sit deep; they form an obvious physical barrier to opposing forwards. Spurs defenders are quicker over the ground. Both teams seem strong in the air at set pieces. Both teams have been effective this season.
Of course. But one individual apparently cannot deal with the fact that the Spurs TEAM has the BEST defence in the PL this season, and therefore has attempted to reduce it to an individual vs individual comparison. Unfortunately for that person, the stats he provided only further prove the Spurs individual is better than the Leicester one. PS : In a similar vein I am awaiting the sequel (on why Spurs do not have the best attack or striker in the PL this season) ...
Of course I can. Spurs have been the best team defensively in the league this season. Stats show that. As for the best striker in the league, the stats show that Vardy has been the best striker in the league.
Something tells me that while defending is apparently the only thing that's important to defenders, the same won't apply to striking and strikers.
Nice insight, cheers TCM. Dack having a good shot would definitely make sense, considering he's netted 11 in 25 according to Wikipedia, which is a great return from a midfielder. It's probably going to be tough for any young guy in League 1 or 2 now when being spoke and praised about because after what Dele's achieved, a lot are likely going to be touted in the media as potentially "the next Dele Alli" and realistically that just won't be the case, we really hit the jackpot with Dele, you could arguably sign another 50 youngsters from the lower leagues with promising reputations and none will be able to match what he's done, though that's not saying they won't be Premier League standard, just that people will begin comparing what a young player stepping up to the big league can do and using Dele as the bench mark. Be interesting to see Dack's development over the next couple of years, I'm gonna try and keep an eye out for him.
Fellow Spurs 606 : Some of you may be aware of an obscure informal award given to the "best" striker at the end of every season, known as the "golden boot" . Apparently, to win it, they take the goals you score all season. And then add the number of assists. I guess the one with the highest total is deemed "best" striker that season.
surely he's right - you're claiming goals and assists are the crucial stats here, rather than just goals...
Why do people bang on about assists they are quite possibly the most overrated stat in football. There are plenty of players who get very few assists but who's overall contribution is much greater. Runners off the ball who create space, players who start a move with a slide rule pass from the back these are assists but not given the same credit as the last bloke to touch the ball before the scorer
Defending stats are important when deciphering a defender's ability just as attacking stats are used to assimilate an attacker's ability.
Stats aren't actually important at all, but if they were then footballing ones would be important to footballers. You're clearly cherry picking, again. Why am I not surprised? Do you remember when I used statistics to support my claim that Leicester play counter-attacking football and you refused to accept it? Why are these stats suddenly important, while those were irrelevant, despite causing you to have a meltdown?
Coming soon on AKCJ TV : Why the largest value of "goals for" minus "goals against" does not mean you have the best goal difference.
Not quite sure where i've said that you haven't scored the most goals, conceded the fewest and have the best goal difference throughout the season. It obviously means little when you're 7 points behind but hey-ho. Whatever helps you sleep at night
