I know. That Cowes to Southampton trip is a real bugger. On top of that there's the return. You wouldn't catch me doing it. Factor in getting to the ferry terminals and California is just a hop across the pond.

Yoshida is too polite to leave anyone hanging, but he seems to prefer avoiding the bro shake when possible. A stance I agree with wholeheartedly. Romeu OTOH, seamlessly executed the bro shake/handshake/dap trifecta at pace. I value that sort of adaptability and all-around game in a midfielder.

There's a danger of blaming Pardew here. I know many people wouldn't care about that, but some would prefer the clarity. Pardew wasn't in charge of scouting and recruitment while at Newcastle. That was some other bloke whose name has popped up recently [basically, I can't remember it] for criticism. Then you have the type of player Newcastle like to go for then and these days. Highly technical, above all else, but at a cut price, because they are going to be moved on at a profit, and fairly young, if possible, for longevity. Or at least that's the idea. It's part of their business model. Shane Long doesn't fit that mould. He isn't the most technical player. He isn't the youngest, so they didn't believe they could improve him substantially. Long's gifts aren't what Newcastle openly look for even if they need them. So they were going to give him the pass-by at every opportunity. I suspect they thought they had a better player in Cisse anyway. Perhaps they should play him sometimes.
