How fast is Shane Long? He got to one ball that was going out of play as if he was on wheels....no way should he have been able to get there.
Like LTL said above, Long did get there first by a fraction, but the keeper came out and took everything out, ball and long. Think Jay should have been brought on sooner, the game was going flat and Saints needed a pick me up
People whinged about this guy, but I have a strong memory of Lukaku and Long terrifying our defence for WBA and always thought he would be a good signing. Absolutely love the guy, and I hope he has a great Euros - but not so good that Liverpool then sign him!
Well, after promising to meet some of you over the last couple of years I was very glad I was finally able to do it. Fats, not only did you arrive bloody late I still didn't get that pint you promised me!! Good crowd from not 606 good to be able to put faces to posters, even if i didn't get the drink I was promised.
Are you insinuating that us Islanders (yes, Fran isn't alone in being a Caulkhead able to read and write) are less than perfect in every way? All Islanders greet each other with the 'high six' hand gestures, beloved of locals everywhere. Remember, we must have been able to swim, just to get to the Island (Obviously the webbed fingers and toes helped...) Incidentally, 'Letting the cat out of bag' is from the same concept as 'pig in a poke'. Look at that - self-deprecating, and knowledgeable - a truly special breed.
I missed the game as I was at a good friend's 50th birthday bash. I will watch the highlights later upon my return. I do remember a previous Newcastle match at St Marys where their defence was awful and Alan Hansan did some of my favourite punditry ever; "I will go first on this. This is the worst goal ever conceded. This couldn't t have been any easier for Southampton if they were playing nobody "
Having played for an island team for a couple of seasons, I do have an affiliation to the islanders and coming from a small six fingered Hampshire town myself!
Yup- but friends are friends. There will be other games, my friend is only 50 once. If my post seems odd previously it's because I accidentally posted it.
Favourite chants of the day: "You've had a shot, you've had a shot..." morphing into "You've had two shots, you've had two shots..." morphing into "you've scored a goal, you've scored a goal..." Vin
I know and its not just his speed, love his determination and not afraid to chase and throw himself into a challenge risking injury as he did a couple of times yesterday. Great player, and probably still not seen his consistent best. Could be a really great player.
Long really is an effective player when played to his strengths. He has two weaknesses which are no more than inconsistencies and Saints are coaching them out of him. 1] His first touch. 2] His link play. I've only mentioned it once or twice before, since he came to Saints, as I hate to criticise such a willing player, but Ronald mentioned it the other day, so if he says so...
Great to meet you too RAWMOK, and quite funny that after saying goodbye outside the turnstile we ended up sitting almost next to each other! I agree with everything you say about the football family thing. And don't forget that 3 of the people in Fats' photo are Newcastle fans, and yet they were all chatting quite happily about football and so on to the others. And when I first met up with Beddytare inside the pub he was asking people if there was anyone from not606, and a different group of Newcastle fans sitting at a table turned round and said hello to him! Great to meet Saintritchie and Tom as well as seeing the usual suspects again too. Like Dave says above, I was also quite impressed with the younger Onionman's record of always seeing Saints finishing higher than the previous season. I think this fact should be sent to Ronald and the team as an extra motivation to win the last 5 games. We don't want any disappointment in Onionman's house!
