Well that was an interesting exercise, apart from Bobby and Andy, everyone else was more concerned about my use of the C word rather than the points I raised.

Maybe rampant boredom is setting in on this thread?

W_Y, I think that one of the problems is that politics is such a large theme - do we mean British party politics, the environment, World politics, economics, corruption in all spheres, even football is political in a sense. Also, a left wing definition of politics would see it as a much larger subject - going far beyond party politics. Or is it just a case of each of us describing our own dream society. Such a thread has problems sticking to a line. Also, we have very different definitions of what we see as 'left' and 'right' - in fact there are no agreed definitions of these labels. An example of this would be in the overlapping of themes such as Marxist class conflict with racial tension - a person can believe in a society of collective ownership on the one hand, but be racist as hell on the other - so what is he, left or right ? The EU. debate is interesting because it does not follow the normal left vs. right lines (which is why we see Galloway on the same side as Farage). Maybe we should have a debating thread with one theme per week and stick to it. My problem with focusing on things like the financial misdemeanours of individual British politicians is that I am too far away from that here and do not have access to the same media.

I initially tutted and thought what is this all about? Why do we need some Yank actor telling us what he thinks we need, as if his argument had merit or value because he is an actor. <doh>

Then I read this in the article:
"...Now we've got the Panama thing. What is it? Why doesn't anybody want to pay taxes and just fix the country and make everybody have a good life? It's really crazy."

    Fair play to him. <ok>

He (DD) spends a fair amount of time over here and he is a film producer as well as an actor - he understands the money side and the law, raising money is what movie producers do. He is well placed and perfectly entitled to comment.

Quite right. Probably better informed than me, a Brit. I do specialise in 'glib', Fez, so if I came across as anti-American or xenophobic, I do assure you I'm neither. :)

I suppose my main dig was at celebrity again. I'm all for all members of the general public being involved in politics, it's just the concept that celebrity endorsements are of greater value. Unfortunately, although of course they should not be of greater value, I think they are of greater impact. That was at the heart of my knee-jerk response, not the fact he is foreign. <ok>

I reemerge from under my rock and 'rampant boredom' is declared. <yikes>
I've been called all sorts of things (as we all have), mostly anatomical as I reflect on them, but "rampantly boring" is new. It's such a brilliant concatenated idea. I love language. :)
vic is particularly gifted with words and I really hope it was aimed at me, I want to brag about it. :D

BTW, Vic, I don't really think it was aimed specifically at me, but don't destroy my illusion it was. I love it. :)

I'm not bothered about name-calling of most politicians, I think the majority deserve it (didn't exactly say that to my local Tory MP I've just emailed re enforced academy schooling, of course ;)), but I think the titling of Corbyn as 'Comrade' really depends on who makes it. It's a bit like the P word (or the Q word ending in R) in the gay community. If they use it about themselves or others, they own that, so it's not offensive. But for others to refer to Elton (or, of course, any man or woman) as a P or a Q, I find that offensive and I defend him (them).

A couple of very interesting points, cologne. I think the idea of a weekly themed thread, is a very good one. We can learn from each others' knowledge base from a far broader aspect than this thread.

Re racist socialists, I hope they are dying out. I think it is an area that causes confusion that groups like EDL and UKIP thrive upon.

No, no, not at all. We all do glib from time to time (especially where Americans are concerned :emoticon-0105-wink: )but you went off and did some research on the matter and made an informed comment. Not everyone does.

I suppose de Vito refused to listen to his expensive accountants who had ideas on keeping his tax liability as low as possible. The Americans don't need to send their cash abroad they have their own tax haven states.
