Unfortunately, this is the way on this WEB site. He can make ridiculous assumptions about people and any political allegiance they may have, accuse them of all sorts and roundly abuse them if they dare have a differing opinion. Yet if SH or I react, we are rounded on by the great and the good. Personally I have stopped responding.....

Absolutely spot on and the issues with property prices in the SE have been around for years. Over 30 years ago when we married, Mrs W_Y and I had to move from Herts to Bandit Country as we could not afford a decent house to start our family and we had saved hard for over 5 years for s decent deposit.
As you state, it's hard and requires some sacrifice, but it can be done.

SH started the insults long before I did, and you started insulting me before I'd ever spoken to you.

Please continue to not respond <ok>

I was a student when I was 21, having to pay for my fees/rent/living costs so worked throughout my degree. I've nearly constantly had a job ever since I returned to England aged 19.

How you ever expect to save up several tens of thousands of pounds whilst paying rent in London I do not know. I earn good money working in IT but even then, it'd take me years to save up for a deposit, and with property prices increasing faster than I can save I can't see how I'd ever afford it.

Of course I wasn't talking about every town/village in the SE, it was a generalisation. I've lived in London and Brighton for the last 12 years and I'd never be able to afford a place in either city, and to get a decent job in my sector London is the best place to be. I also refuse to use the government bribes to sell off the council housing in London...

I'm happy to move abroad to buy a house later on in life, houses in my village in France sell for about 20000€, but at the moment I honestly see no way out of it. I'm not from a silver spoon background and I don't want to see one of my relatives die so I can maybe get a small amount of money given to me for a deposit. I've always worked and always will work.

I gave you facts and you questioned them. The only way for you to see that I'm not talking nonsense is to google it, I'm not doing it for you.

The solution is simple: build more houses and stop overseas investors using London housing as a long term investment. It's a weird coincidence that most MPs seem to be landlords and refuse to do anything about the current situation...

The housing bubble will burst at some point and a few of people will be very unhappy...But at least homes will be affordable again!

I wasn't suggesting everyone should have a property in London by 21! I was just putting forward my own experience and showing it can be done. I'm not expecting students to be buying property <laugh>

How I expect to? I already did it. I worked mon-fri 9-5 in an office and worked my evenings and weekends in a pub, 7 days a week work, didn't go out at all, saved all my money. Soon enough I had enough for a deposit and proof of earnings for a mortgage. I managed to save quite a decent deposit but I also have friends who have put down deposits of 10k or less on their first properties dependant on the scheme and mortgage offers around at the particular time of purchase.

You also don't have to buy council housing... Loads of new build developments have schemes for first time buyers..

I didn't end up with a property because of a silver spoon background or an inheritance from a dead relative, it was hard work, clever saving, short term sacrifice and good decision making. It's completely possible, but you'll never do it if your attitude is that it's not.

I never said you had a silver spoon background or inheritance, did I?

Rent in London for a shared room is about £650 a month. Travel is £120-£140 depending on which Zone you live in. I pay £250 back on my bank loan. If I'm taking home about £2k a month, that's more than half gone already. So let's say I can put aside £600 a month (which is a fair bit of cash).

To get a 1 bed flat in a Zone 1-6 part of London you're looking at £250k minimum. A 10% deposit on that is £25k. So that means 2 years of saving.

Unfortunately house prices are rising so fast that you can probably add another year at least.

You said 'Soon enough'? Either you bought a flat in a super cheap area or property was much cheaper when you bought it, because nowadays you don't just get flats like that.

Some people have a 'can do' attitude, others less so, it is down to personal decisions.

So live with total sacrifice, Toby, and one day, in three, maybe five, years, all this could be yours:
    http://www.hamhigh.co.uk/property/revealed_the_cheapest_property_to_buy_in_camden_1_4484980
And of course prices only go up, so you'll be "on the ladder". <doh>

Don't think I'm patronising you because I'm wrinkly, but you are the embodiment of the sort of person we need in the UK. But if market forces <doh> drive you abroad, then that is what the market dictates, so that must be what's best. <doh><doh>

Our obsession with owning property is not shared across the whole continent - cologne is probably best to advise us on that.

I think the idea that people "earn a living" from merely owning property is abhorrent. That's not work.

You have admitted your decisions have failed, others would chose differently to make sure they worked.

Apparently it's my attitude the problem.

I should just want more money to spend on property and I'll have it according to superhorns <ok>

Millions of pensioners are having a great retirement due to cashing in their properties and downsizing leaving them with adequate finance. Maybe most of those struggled to buy their first property.

I'm not that annoyed by it, as I can happily own property elsewhere, it's just a huge drain on my ressources.

There aren't any secret ways to get a foot on the property ladder nowadays...

That bedsit looks lovely by the way, can't wait to have no life for 3 years and be able to just about scrape 10% of the value of it together

I followed another's advice and ignore him. He has nothing of value to add, he just tries to antagonise and play rich clever boy (on reading his posts, it's apparent he's neither).

Having had a break from the boards I'm saddened to see this thread has polarised so much. Ignoring SH has made it much more like it was, but the debate from the right has become more 'comicbook', which is a great shame. I'm very much from the left, there's a couple on here with whom I agree on almost every word, and several I disagree with sometimes/sometimes agree but can understand the idea (where they're 'coming from'). But I think w_y, and I'm sorry to say this, has been drawn into the bating sometimes by SH rather than offering his once always cogent (if different from mine ;)) views.
