We are all a little bit guilty of this type of snobbery too. I think back to the time we were linked with Ashley Williams and nobody (me included) wanted him. He has been putting in better and more consistent performances for Swansea & Wales than any of our centre backs in the same time period. I think someone like Moreno has been given a lot more leeway than a British full back putting in the same performances as him would. Allen's performances don't merit the sort of criticism he receives either. I don't know why any of us do it but I do think we are susceptible to judging players based on their nationalities rather than their abilities, which would mean something like what happened at Leicester with a spine of home grown British players being almost impossible to replicate at Liverpool.

Are you accusing me of showing positive bias toward the Welsh Pirlo simply because he is Welsh?? <whistle> #nonsense

    Except...

    Huth... Kante. Mahrez ain't english.

Schmeichal is home grown but bought from city
Albrighton was dumped by villa and drinkwater dumped by Utd.

However all that said. Long term we could be here saying whatever happened to these guys in 18months time.

The issue is not rejecting home grown it is chasing immediate results and short cuts..

Dortmund replaced what 17 players under Klopp. Was it instant success.. no...

Same can be said of many sides

Can players develop? Yes. Can we look at a guy and know what he can get to? Yes.

I'm not saying all of their team is British/home grown. I'm saying a lot of their players are British/homegrown cast offs that didn't make the grade at other clubs or from the lower leagues. Schmeichel, Morgan, Simpson, Drinkwater, Albrighton & Vardy all fit under that criteria. Even Huth is classed as home grown.

But yeah, I do think the issue is partly down to a snobbery toward British players. Ashley Williams' performances for Swansea have outstripped anything Dejan Lovren has done in England, but because of the fact he has a fancier name we all preferred him as an option.

    What's Williams done again?

Why is he gods gift all of a sudden?

Seriously.. I see a lot of functional names at Leicester and 3 guys really performing great. Leicester also dumped both cups.for this so great n all.... but it was expected to be more short lived but we will expect still it all to end up in the ****s

  7. He's been a good solid consistent performing for three or four years. I'd much rather have that than someone that does well in two of three games. Never mind what we've had!

  9. It's worked for Leicester <whistle>

The sad thing is, Williams as been far better than anything we've had during that time. That's not exactly putting on a high pedestal mind <laugh>

It's worked for a while. All back while vardy and mahrez break.

Equally last year it didn't work at all until last games where this run started.

Then they managed to see Pearson sacked over son.. who knows.

I know. So was my response.
Mignolet isn't a terrible keeper, but of course there are better. I think he'd expect to be more than back-up though, so if we did manage to con persuade a better one in I think he'd be off. Very few teams seem to be able to keep two first-team standard keepers happy.
And he is first-team standard, even if not quite the level that we'd like. There again, we're not at the level we'd like.

  12. I'm inclined to say Migs wouldn't be happy being a back-up keeper so wouldn't stick around. However, I'd say Begovic is a better keeper and he's back-up at Chelsea.

I don't know, who? All I'm saying is he's not as bad as some make out.
Perhaps if he'd stayed at Sunderland they wouldn't be where they are now? <whistle>

Mignolet has mistakes in him and doesn't dominate his box well enough. He doesn't inspire confidence - but nor have most of our keepers for the last few decades, they've all been error-prone.
Reina was much better, but even he had mistakes in him, and everyone seems to have forgotten how much he used to flap at things for quite a while after joining.

He may have flapped for a while but he helped us get to a cl final as he is a quality keeper. Have the same confidence in MIGs to get us to a Europa final?

PS any quoting this post by anyone after the 2 games doesn't count in case he does succeed. I'm asking NOW as it shows the confidence people have in him and how many can honestly say they do?

  15. Sorry but... <laugh>

    Hyypia v Sakho...?
    Carragher v Skrtel or Lovren...?
    Riise v Moreno...?
    Finnan or Arbeloa v Clyne...?
    Alonso v Milner or Hendo...?
    Mascherano v Can...?
    Kuyt v Lallana...?
Torres v Studge, Origi, Ings or Benteke...?
    Etc...

The only players we currently have that would stand half a chance of getting in the team Reina was in (when we got to the CL final) would be Studge, Coutinho and possibly Firmino. The rest aren't fit to lace the predecessors boot laces! that includes Flanno, Sakho, etc too.

Without doubt, Reina was a better keeper than Migs is now. But you can't criticise him because the rest of the team is **** <laugh>

Jerzy Dudek played a significant role in us winning a CL trophy - does that make him a better keeper than Reina?
You can't extrapolate from cherry-picked stats to make the big picture.

Do I have confidence in Mignolet to get us to the EL final? I don't think like that, because it's not just down to him. I wouldn't have confidence in Reina to get us there if he was in this team.
Why do fans jump on individual players all the time? It's a team game, and the limitations of our current team go far beyond those of our goalkeeper. He's just a part of the picture.

That being said I think if we can bring in 3-4 quality additions over summer, plus players already signed and those coming back from injury like Ings and Gomez, we won't be that far off. The current squad isn't all ****e, it's just very inconsistent and will perform better with some quality on the pitch to control things
