Phil Brown PNE manager. I posted this on the PNE forum, but thought it might be of interest to the Tiger fans. THE POWER OF PHIL. The link below is worth a read whether you agree with the topic or the views expressed or not. The theme clearly gives rise to debate on Phil Brown's tenure at Hull City and his potential for becoming a successful Prem manager (given time). Currently Phil Brown is manager of Div 1 side PNE and having to cope without money to spend and at the same time returning PNE via promotion back to the championship. This is far from being an easy task due to financial restraints and a clear out of PNE's high earning better (arguably) players. Phil Brown is having to rely on wheeling and dealing to bring players in and using several of the very promising youngsters he has inherited. So then although highly thought of by the author of the article in the link below, Phil Brown has first to prove himself in Div 1 with with a club going through a very difficult period in it's history. Can Phil Brown deliver ???? we will see. http://soccernet.espn.go.com/columns...-brown?cc=5739 Have a good season Tigers...
This should be interesting for sure. Will be watching PNE this season and how he gets on there. PB biggest error was his player recruitment in summer 2009 and not standing upto Duffer Duffen when he sold Turner. Hope his player management skills are also better than when @ City. They were shocking for heavens sake. The way he handled and treated Dean Windass for starters was the beginning of his end. At PNE he has not much quality so PB must learn new tricks.
Seems to be a problem Brastov......."Youâve requested an ESPNSoccernet.com page that cannot be found. We are experiencing high traffic volumes and are working to resolve the problem promptly. Thank you for you patience, and please try back shortly". I hope it clears then you can get the link to work....
To be fair, we had Cousin and King up front who were both better players to start games and Geo was playing behind them to make up the 3. When we drew with Everton in the early part of the season it was Windass who then wrote an article saying he thought he should be playing and couldn't understand why he wasn't and that started the deterioration there. It might have been understandable (though still not acceptable) if we'd been doing badly, but 2 or 3 weeks later we were joint top of the league so Windass didn't even have a point. I can understand him being disappointed not to be playing more, but it should have been obvious to him that after scoring at Wembley he should have retired or gone back to Bradford with a testimonial. He was never going to be a regular in the PL, and as favourites for the drop he was unlikely to do anything better for us than he'd done at Wembley. He could have gone out on a high for us knowing he'd done the job, signed for Bradford on the back of it and helped them get promoted again. Instead he stayed and started complaining he wasn't playing whenever we didn't win, and then managed to fall out with the Oldham manager when we loaned him out. Ashbee we had a similar situation with, having captained and scored for us in every division he should have retired at the end of the first PL season because there was nothing more to be achieved with us in the time he had left as a player.
It's not that I don't think he could do the job still, it's more a case of what I'd have done if I was in Ashbee's position. You've had a career in the lower leagues. You've joined a 4th division club and become their captain. Whilst you've been there you've scored in all 4 divisions and become the first player ever to captain the same side in all 4 divisions including getting the club into the top flight for the first time in their 104 year history. You've then gone on and captained them to survival in the top flight. What can you do the following season that will top that feeling? You're too old to break into the squad and know you're not good enough to play for England, but you've shown you can do a good job at the top level of domestic football. The only way you can go one better the next season is to have the club qualify for Europe, and then get to play in Europe the year after. It was extremely unlikely we'd manage it in the next couple of years, and you've got a history of serious injuries. With kids at home that are growing up you're going to want to be able to play football and things with them in the garden and all that sort of stuff. For me it just wouldn't have been worth the risk of another injury that stopped me being able to do that when there's no realistic greater accomplishment to target and I'd earnt enough to be able to live comfortably for the rest of my life. Would have much preferred to go out on that high with a farewell game, especially having now seen his time with us end with a relegation and then an unceremonious midseason exit.
People like Windass and Ashbee do so well because they have an incredible amount of determination that makes up for their limitations. I don't think anybody was saying that Windass and Ashbee should have retired when you suggested. King and Cousin were brought in very late. Obviously both were a lot better than Windass so his complaints were sour grapes. Ashbee had a great first season in the PL. It seems that Bullard had too much influence.
I never said other people were saying that. It was what I felt at the times were the right way for them to go out on a high rather than having to suffer the not being in the side regularly which was always on the cards (Windass) or playing on for the sake of it without any realistic chance of achieving more than had been. Admittedly I didn't see it going so wrong for Ashbee in terms of his relationship with the club, but like I said, he was never likely to top the accomplishment of that first PL season so if I'd been him, knowing I was financially secure and had his injury record I'd have bowed out then.
Obviously King and Cousin were a lot better than Windass ? Bolloks of the first order ! Cousin doesn't even come close, and King hasn't got the balls to even try to reach Windass's standard. Let's just see where both are when they're pushing 40 ! FFS !
Doubt you blokes will be aware of this, but Ashbee hasn't played a single pre season game for PNE .....so far, and with just tonight's game against Morecambe and Wigan on Sunday to come it is becoming difficult to see how he will be match fit for the start of the season. No injury has been mentioned at all, but PB has indicated that Ashbee will be fit for the first game. ???? I wonder if PB wrapped Ashbee in cotton wool for the Tigers pre season games. Anyway thanks for responding to the article..
Link doesn't work, whatever power Phil Brown has it was enough to turn him orange, thats for sure! Be interesting to see if he gets Preston on the right track, their fans are in for some comedy moments I reckon!
