???? Either you're laughing at the republican supporters, or you don't know the most rudimental details of the foundation of the irish republic. I'm genuinely not sure which,
For the avoidance of doubt, I have no over riding emotion whilst typing this comment (see last night's conversation). My only reaction to the comment, is to genuinely pity (and I don't use that word in an offensive way), the ignorance and disposition of someone who would find such details funny, or use them in an attempt to cause offence. it's genuinely sad that such people can exist still in the 21st century, and they should be guven charity, whether that's in the form of free psychological counseling, or whatever else.
I'm not going anywhere with it ... I'm laughing its use. I'm assuming people don't refer to roi as "the free state" regularly ... maybe they do in hardcore republican circles. Either way, I find it funny.
I don't think you could have read what I wrote. I didn't say that I didn't like the comment. I said that I pitted its author, and (somewhat generously I think) suggested that he should be given free support of some kind. If I left GC, that would have no bearing on whether he receives such support.
Personally Rob I think all and any terrorist sympathisers deserve getting their front doors kicked in an hour before dawn. But those days are over, at least in Northern Ireland, and on balance it's probably for the best.
Agh. It was the 'don't understand the subject matter' option. The Free State, is arguably the only 'achievement' of armed rebellion in irish history. But it is essentially identical to the Home Rule status which they were going to be afforded at the end of WW1 anyway, so it was essentially pointless. The free state, is something entirely different to the republic of ireland. After the creation of the Free State, there was a civil war (not involving the British) in which "hardcore republicans" fought less extreme republicans, in an attempt to reject the free state model. They lost the war, however some time later, a republic came into existance without any armed struggle, as a result of a dodgy referendum, the results of which noone could be bothered to argue about. Hope this helps your understanding
I wad just sayin, you were laughing at something you didn't understand. Suggesting that knowing what you are talking about is "boring", personally strikes me as a fairly weak argument, but hey.
About then, yeah. That's the one. To save us making an extra comment each.... because only 17 percent of the voting population, voted for independence.
Well the Luftwaffe never brought London to it's knees, so I hardly think blowing up a few dustbins in Archway was gonna do the trick. But every nation clings to it's glorious myths. I'm quite happy for you lot to sing about your brave patriotic heroes if it makes you feel better.
