Anyone watch the Blackwell v Eubank fight on Channel 5 ? Brutal at times. Blackwell left on a stretcher, didn't look good, hope he's ok.
Should have been stopped much earlier (discussed this in the England match thread as it was going on while that debate was happening...oops) I know it's difficult to stop a defending champion, but went on too long. Fingers crossed he's ok with no lasting damage
BBC reporting he's been put in an induced coma with a bleed on the brain. Horrible memories of the Eubank Sr v Michael Watson fight.
Blackwell's reputation for being a hard man who gets better the longer a fight goes on worked against him last night. Should have been stopped earlier.
Don't most boxing fans spend the fight urging their chosen champion to knock 7 bells out of the other boxer? Isn't that sort of the point? Why do people get all concerned for the boxers welfare when this sort of thing happens? It's not like it should be a surprise.
It was a good scrap but should have been stopped two rounds earlier either by the ref of by Blackwell's corner throwing the towel in. He was way behind on points and looked dead on his feet yet Blackwell's corner were urging him on saying he'd spent a year preparing for this fight and claiming he had Eubank on the back foot. Chris Eubank senior actually got into the ring and pleaded with the ref and Blackwell's corner to stop the fight two rounds before they actually did and he was ordered out of the ring and warned. If any fingers need pointing they should be at the referee and Blackwell's corner. The Eubanks behaved impeccably.
No, he didn't look alright at all Walter. His corner should have thrown the towel in as their man was taking one hell of a beating and stood no chance of knocking Eubank out. Currently in an induced coma it is to be hoped that he recovers and then strongly advised to retire from the game.
What Eubank said to junior at the end of the eight - "If the referee doesn't stop it then, I don't know what to tell you, but I will tell you this, if he doesn't stop it and we keep beating him like this, he is getting hurt, and if it goes to a decision why didn't the referee stop the fight, I don't get why".
Eubank snr also asked his opponents corner to throw in the towel and asked the referee why he hasn't stopped the fight. Suppose he asked your advice first.
It was perfectly reasonable for him to question why the fight went on so long, particularly bearing in mind he once caused brain damage to another fighter in similar circumstances. That second sentence makes you look really sad.
Dony worry Olm it'll only be manslaughter not murder .You'll be out in 7 years. Think on next time though
The book stops with the referee first and foremost. He has to have the health and well being of both fighters in the ring. Particularly if boxers are taking a beating and not offering anything in return.
Blackwell is one of those boxers who just keeps going forward no matter what. Call it bravery or call it dumb, but last night it came down to just how much punishment his corner and the ref were willing to see him take. From the first round to the last he stopped virtually every punch with his head and there were at least four points in the fight when Eubank's onslaught was so vicious that any other fight would have been stopped. I hope Blackwell recovers fully and I hope he finds a new career because he hasn't got what it takes at the top level.
