77 today. The club marks the Club President's anniversary with a MOTD video goal against WHU in 1971, when he'd converted from right-wing to right-midfield. Instead, I'll put up a Pathe News England v Rest of the World game when Terry was in his absolute pomp. A nippy, tricky goal scoring right-winger. Of course, he scores in this match too. Happy Birthday Terry. Several household names there from history.
Happy Birthday Terry, Here's to many more! Fabulous video too TSS, brought back some great memories of watching football in my early days. Terry's goal was with his left foot as well!
Now that has made me feel very old, remember my Dad taking me to that game as a wee laddie, don't recall to much about the game, but I remember our Austin A40 breaking down on the way home.
T You weren't alone. Every Austin A40 broke down at some point. I have heard stories in my youth by my eldest brother. [retired engineer] King pins were a favourite, apparently.
Cars used to break down regularly....yet another example of how kids don't know they are born Every journey an adventure.
I must have rattled off a few thousand Hail Mary's through clenched teeth up and down the motorways of Britain.
My first road map of GB had a dotted line where the proposed M1 was going. God, I'm old. Can remember being excited when I saw my first dual carriageway as a young child.
Happy Birthday Terry. One of my heroes, along with John Sydenham and Derek Reeves when I watched from the boys' enclosure at the Dell.
Spot on TSS. I was a wee boy and had no idea as to the relevance of the reception that player got ... at the time.
Brilliant clip. I was in his fan club as a boy. I met him recently and showed him my membership card (!) he was genuinely 'over the moon!' For all you youngsters - Terry Paine was one of the best passers of the ball there has ever been, EVER! I was at that Hereford game too. I can still recall one pass he made, a chip over a couple of defenders right into the path of a Hereford player. It literally caused a collective 'gasp' from the Dell crowd.
A true great. Luckily he played in an era when a player could afford to be loyal to a club and still get selected for England! Saw many a goal created or delivered by him. Strangely one of my favourites was a penalty against Nottm Forest. We needed to win to stay up in our first season in the top flight. Forest needed the win to keep alive hopes of winning the championship (in fact United were winning 6-1 at Upton Park so that dream was gone). Terry beat the despairing dive of the keeper to make it 2-1 and then shook the keeper's hand as he picked up the ball. It had been such a topsy turvy season. Two 6-2 home wins, scoring bucket loads (big Ron) and conceding trillions. The relief and joy when that penalty went in outshone seeing England win the World Cup just a few months earlier.
I remember reading a serialised version of Jackie Charlton's autobiography, in which he claimed to have a certain number of players (5?) in his black book. Paine was one of those players, that JC wanted to kick over the stand, because of his persistent niggling, ankle tapping.
There's no doubt Terry could dish it out, but then Jack Charlton was no Saint. He played for Leeds Utd and was one of the ones that got them their reputation. There's that piece in The Damned Utd where Brian Clough tells the Leeds players they've fouled and cheated their way to titles, and he wasn't exaggerating either. And I can quite believe that he really said that too.
