Watched Jeff Lives At Home last night in between my X Files marathon, Ed Helms and Susan Sarandon, it was good, very watchable- on Netflix
I always thought it was just me that couldn't stand Carey......seems there are more people with taste on here than I expected!
Carrey is hit and miss. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is a magnificent film, and he is magnificent too. The Truman Show is a great film too. The rest is.... meh.
Finally finished my Kurosawa stuff, will likely post the Ran review at some point tomorrow. Day 13 of Kurosawa: Kagemusha Synopsis: A petty thief with an utter resemblance to a samurai warlord is hired as the lord's double. When the warlord later dies the thief is forced to take up arms in his place. Review: It wasn't the case with Ran, but I strongly felt that this Kurosawa flick was missing Mifune. Although Nakadai is indeed an established actor himself and did a great job as Hidetora in Ran, Mifune would've done more justice to the part of the lord Shingen in Kagemusha. This was just a part that would've suited Mifune a lot better. Nakadai is still good in the film though, playing both the late lord and his double. The film itself is amazing, full of memorable scenes and riveting images. The set design during the dream sequence is simply outstanding in it's use of colour and utterly unique. The soundtrack was good as well. It's very fun to watch how they avoid exposing identity of the double of their late Emperor. Good script and great execution. Very heartbreaking final battle scene, seeing the horses in pain and all the carnage of war. Ironic in the end that Shingen wished his death to be kept a secret for 3 years so he could save his clan and at the end of those 3 years, his clan comes to a complete end. Rating: 8.5/10
Day 80, film 80, "no reservations" cat-zet-jones and Aaron eckhart. Another cooking type film, my other Half said its good mmmm, I'm wondering what she's Basing it on... I'll give it a go, mind you looking at CZJ wouldn't be a waisted night....
I am sure Carey is a good actor but I don't generally enjoy his films. I think my problem with him is those funny face films he first came to prominence with. I recon they both made and restricted his career. I find it hard to watch him without expecting the gurning. Not the best typecasting and must have restricted his offers. I think he is a good actor though, just bad films. Watched Michael Collins again today. Glad I knew it well as I spent most of the time explaining it to my OH. Great film and as Rtr said, one of Neeson's best. Without going into taboo specifics, I was struck by how the betrayal as portrayed was so similar to unrelated events of the past few days. You have stamina Quill! You must be walking around seeing life as a series of Kurosawa frames by now. Those images stick!
Carrey is actually quite a good stand up comic, and whilst there is a lot of his physical work in his comedy, it is much better than a lot of his films. Unsurprisingly the two examples of great Carrey films rely on a lot more dramatic elements (particularly Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, that's certainly no comedy). I'm quite glad I have finished the AK stuff now (will post the Ran review sometime Monday afternoon/evening), as much as I love his films, I need something different for a bit... Thank god Batman v Superman comes out this Friday, that's a nice change from Kurosawa.
Day 81, film 81, "the hunger games, mocking jay part 2". Finally managed to see it, my good lady went back to Harrogate today with my daughter to nursery fare, They run a baby nursery boutique business, so I'm sat on the iPad watching films, sorry luv Miss placed the list of jobs you gave me..oops!! Wasn't overly impressed with the film but by god I ****ing love the music. It's one of the best pieces Of music I've ever heard... I looked it up on the tinternet And listened to it from start to Finnish, **** me I nearly Had tears in my eyes....
The last one... Day 14 of Kurosawa: Ran Synopsis: An elderly lord abdicates to his three sons, and the two corrupt ones turn against him. Review: Terrific adaptation of King Lear. Of course it is not a faithful adaptation of Shakespeare's play, it is more of a film inspired by it. Nonetheless, the very essence of Shakespeare's play is captured by Kurosawa's visually stunning epic about an old ruler's haste and foolish decision which his entire family pays the price for. Tatsuya Nakadai gives a masterful performance as a once fierce and now shell-shocked old emperor. He is surrounded by a terrific cast. Kurosawa's vision however must ultimately be applauded for managing to show us just how gruesome the Bard's tale is; through the gore and violence, teaching us the same lessons about war which Shakespeare wanted to teach us. Striking and breathtaking film, the length of Kurosawa's late masterpiece is of no importance because it is so engrossing. Cannot wait to revisit this film in the future and see Kurosawa's bold colors again. Rating: 10/10
Day 82, film 82, "the internship", vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson. A comedy about two 40 something's who apply to google For an internship.. Trailers look funny.... We'll see....
As a fan of the comic book, I love that film. Though it definitely is a film tailored to it's specific fanbase rather than the general audience, so I totally understand why people don't like it.
"The internship",wasn't great... But the night ended well, just started watching the 2nd series of "the peaky blinders".... ****ing love this series..
Watched 20 feet from Stardom Documentary about backing singers Brilliant. Incredible number of great records with the hooks sung by such a small, uncredited, group of people I'd recommend it
Turns out that whole sentence might be more true than I expected, as whilst Kurosawa film are usually masterpieces, BvS is getting eviscerated by the critics. As a comic book obsessive, I'm still going to see it.
I've been terribly slack recently with my reviews despite watching a ****load of films. I watched a zombie film from 2012 last night called The Battery. I know, I know, they're mostly all ****, and when I heard this film had a budget of $6000 my expectations were somewhere in the basement. It's just the story of two guys travelling through the woods, no particular destination, there's hardly any zombies, hardly any action and most of the 'fun' actually happens off screen but bugger me, the wife and I really enjoyed it. World War Z it ain't but it's well filmed, funny and is pretty good at building tension. If you're an all out action film fan then this isn't for you, but coming from someone who has seen pretty much every zombie film made in the last 30 years (yes, even Flight of the Living Dead and Aaah!, Zombies), this is up there with films that posses far superior budgets. Decent soundtrack too. 8/10 (Bonus point for making a film way better than Blair Witch with less money)
I rarely agree with the critics TBH. Like to make my own mind up. High Rise with Tom Hiddleston looks good later this month. Good trailer. No spoilers in it just how a Trailer should be.
High Rise does look very good. Hiddleston was linked with being the next Bond, and honestly, I really want that.
