Explosion on Brussels metro, system shut down - reports Posted at08:28 Unconfirmed reports are emerging of an explosion at Maelbeek metro station in Brussels, close to the city's EU institutions. Images posted to social media appear to show smoke emerging from the front of the station.

Grew up in Brussels, my house was 10 km away from the site. Absolutely gutted at this. Still know lot's of people there. I used to drink in a pub near the station in question when I was 14 as the owner was a bit lapse on underage drinking. Paris was ****ing sad but this one feels especially haunting, personally.

Was just going to say, when will it come to England? We seem to be on the ball with our security but you can just never tell. Obviously its a war, we bomb their soldiers but because they cant fight our soldiers etc. so they bomb the civilians.
Nearly everybody in the world becomes a politician whenever a bomb goes off, they all seem to have the answers. I must have read 100 posts on social media today blaming greedy corporate powerhouses for causing the deaths of people in Belgium. Blame David Cameron for it, or Rupert Murdoch but don't dare point the finger at the poor little religious people, they're just doing good deeds for god.
Worryingly a nuclear power station is being evacuated in Belgium ... hopefully that news report is just a precautional procedure and not anything rather more sinister
Meanwhile in Durham the bomb squad have blown up a suspicious untended suitcase - that turned out to be suitcase full of DVDs ...
