When Liverpool signed Torres in the 07/08 season for approx 25 Million the fans had their new idol their new number 9 and they idolised him almost instantly.

In his first season he became the first player since Robbie Fowler in the 1995/96 season, to score more than 20 league goals for Liverpool in a season.

Unfortunately since then it has been a downward spiral the 08/09 season his overall goal tally had dropped from 33 to 17. The next season Torres increased his overall goals to 22.

Injury had become a problem and only 9 goals following in the 10/11 season followed by 1 at new club Chelsea. Torres was already looking a haunted figure by the time he moved on to Chelsea and in hindsight Liverpool had done well to get such a high fee for a player that had not performed in nearly 3 years.

3 years is not a dip in form, there has to be more to this dramatic decline. In Torres first season at Liverpool the whole world sat up and paid attention, here was the next big thing a player who had it all. He would score from anywhere and in any way, defenders were terrified.

Can Villas Boas change Torres fortunes is the big question, if he can then silverware will follow Villas Boas own success may rely on finding the real Fernando Torres.

Depends if Boas has got the balls to adapt the way in which Chelsea play. Set them up so that Torres becomes the main man.

I can't see Anelka or Drogba being too happy about that.

Either way, he's got a problem.
Well, more than one really - an aging team, no youth to speak of, disgruntled/under performing strikers.

Not the best of time to be a Chelsea fan.

It doesn't seem like it as he's keeping Drogba for another season. Maybe he reckons Torres is shot and doesn't want to gamble on building around him. I don't blame him.

Just hearing Drogba's had a storming game today, 3-0.

He's a class player, but yet another shining example of Romans red button technique getting in the way...

A good pre-season getting him fit and a change in tactics is nescessary but for me Drogba outshines Torres on the pitch, and the two cannot/ will not play together...

Interestingly Anelka plays well with Torres, as his style compliments and brings the best out of him...he will fit in with Drogba as well so he is more part of the solution than the problem.

    Rested.

    Yesterday
All my injuries seemed so far away
Now it looks as though they're here to stay
Oh I was fit once, yesterday

    Suddenly
I'm not half the dude I used to be
There's a huge fee hanging over me
    Oh fitness won't come suddenly

    Why I had to go I don't know, I couldn't say
I chose Russian gold, now I long for yesterday

    Yesterday
Just as goals began to come my way
I saw blue and thought that I could play
Like I was good, like yesterday

I dont think Drogba can afford to be a moody so and so now, his pace has reduced recently to that of my Nan. So he should to as he's told.

    General.

That's quality. Is it your own work, or that of the famous Hammer icon, Vincent Price, aka W..........

He would have passed lengthy medical before signing and has been injury free since then (I think) so he should be up to speed this season. There has been talk suggesting that he doesn't trust his body and that there is a mental block stopping him from running at top speed and turning sharply the 2 things that made him a threat. If it is a mental problem other than physical, Villas Boas may be the man to turn him around.

I don't see that extra yard of pace in and around the box that he used to have. Once that goes you never get it back due to age.

Sad to see when a striker starts their decline, unfortunately Torres has had his best years.

That's not necessarilly true. When the edge goes off the pace then a striker has to improve other techniques to compensate. At LFC we have had a classic example of that with Ian Rush.

    This<ok>

One great season at Liverpool, which i believe was the best of his career, doesn't mean his best is in the past although he will have to adapt to compensate.

Yeah very true. Although, he was still a great striker he was never his old self.

Is Torres able to match Rush? Personally i don't see it. Time will tell though <ok>

Alternately, after playing with rags for three years is bound to affect anybodies confidence but how Nando must be laughing to himself to see two thirds of the transfer money spent on a championship pikey with no pedigree other than taking one up the ****ter from his caravan buddy Nolan.

Never known any other fans wishing so hard the lad will fail at Chelsea out of spite, hate or whatever because he left for a now bigger club who plays better football and is in europe every season. Alas for the once great Liverpool those days are long gone.<wah>
