Why do people put so much store in what bookies' odds are?

    dunno

maybe cos they think bookies know more cos its thier business to.

but that ignores its all just risk covering.

Someone won 210k ofa £2 bet at cheltenham day one.

did bookie whine? no he just turned it into photo op and got free publicity off press

they lost their shirts day one but then a couple favorites lose day 2 and alls good.

its just a risk management business... they know no more than anyone else.... they just know theres suckers to be had and those suckers more than coer the guys coming in ITK cleaning out a few shops.

Exactly. Yet people look up to them as though they have some supernatural understanding of the future.
It's all just algorithms designed to give them a profit no matter what the outcome. Once upon a time it must have been a real art- today, with computers, I imagine it's a bit of a doddle.

yeah an independent bookies anywhere near a horse racing town must've needed quite a bit of care and attention.

seeing some little squirt saunter in with muck n his face and ridging boots on stick 500 on some horse on long odds....

well you need to know your business.

but theres always suckers if the favorites always won bookies would be broke. bookies love a long odds winner cos that means they screw the majority. but yeah.... doing it at the course as a tote or running a book in the old days you'd been to be well up.

but then..... there wasn't that much to bet on was there? its 24/7 now in a bookies shop.

I wonder what were the odds on Leicester winning the PL before the start of the season? Or Chelsea being nowhere near it?
Bet the bookies never saw that in their crystal balls.

    huge.

but then the bookies are making a huge profit as city and cheslea were where most moeny was sunk

any bet on lfc is gratefully taken as free money by them.

all utd bets are pure profit too.

someone said it was 5000/1 for leicester as odds but i doubt it was that high... http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/fo...ue-season-is-the-most-unpredictable-ever.html

thta article has lots of changed odds like lukaku form 20/1 for young POTY to 11/4 or vardy from 500/1 for top scorer to 7/4

all it shows is bookies considered them so unlikely that any bet attracted from die hards was free money. then the odds tumble down to hot odds.

I'd say Leicester were more like 500/1 in a real bookies.

    They were 5000/1 mate.

And there were a number of pissed and deluded Leicester fans who took it!

One bloke cashed out for £29k about a fortnight back, but there's loads of others.

Coral said they'll end out paying out over £2m if they pull it off.

(but didn't mention the fortune they'll pocket that they took on City and Chelsea)

    it really was?

wow.. good on them... I thought it to be exaggerated.

that mil play off for coral will be done at a big event where tv and cameras will give coral a huge free advertising worth more than 2mil to them and yes... they took in 10s and 10s of millions on the others.. god only knows
