Speaking with hindsight then yes it's easy to weigh up the risks but in my youth I'd certainly have loved to even have the career of Ecclestone. Educating these young lads in financial matters is important, I wonder how far clubs go in this regard.

yes looking frward as a 17 year old for sure if offered i'd take it. from here? no.

Educating guys who've their headphones in thinking about their next "legal" high is pretty hard i reckon.

Kevin stewart is MEANT to be on 10k a week now. 500k a year.

Now thats going to set him up for life really. house, pension and so forth and so on. does he splash it on cars and piss it up against a wall, who knows.

andre wisdom is on 25k a week.. look at his car he planked in a mud puddle.

conor coady moved away from us who played beside wisdom in our u21s and is on that.

As of today even making it in championship can make you for life.

I do think they've less sense now as they've so much money... but i think back with the guy you were talking about the booze and spending it up was common place and all.

If you use your head then League 2 could set you up for life but getting a young footballer to use his head is the trick.

yeah you do have to expect them to blow the first half of that career before seeing sense.

    we all would really.

thats why in the normal world we see our best earning years later in life while they now seems to see it at 18... when their best year cold out perform 10 of our best years it does create envy but I still think that forklift driver job or hod carrier job.. meh.. i'd rather be me.

Deffo not. You can always learn skills later in life but you cannot earn the money or even dream about what they have (Unless you were born into a nice aristocratic family or know people or are a career criminal). They got paid shedloads for having fun playing football and chilling out the rest of the time. Even after that you will probably have built up enough connections to go into management provided you weren't a total ****er

have no yeah. but i was looking back at me 15 years ago or me now.

Really... if you were say offer oh i dunno. right £100k per year for 20 years knowing you'll have a great pension at the end

    OR

a contract with say 1mil a year now for next 3 years and then a big drop cos you are going to peter out. 20-25 great. 30-35 ok. 35-65 hmmmm sitting on beach? i don't think so. you won't have enough put away to live for 50 odd years.

Or say 250k per year for 10 years then you'll be on scrap heap working as a builder's mate or something.

would you take the latter 2?
Look at old players like rob Jones for LFC. short career that. huge rise form nowhere to lfc and england team. injury ruined it. plus he went bald. He and his wife built a business for himself. He'd be for me an example of a guy who was a great success

Then look at neil ruddock who pissed it up against a wall

    Or david James.

Every 16 year old kid wanted to be a pro footballer score a hat trick every week but the reality of it is 1% make it.

I would like to think mentally, the money i earn in that short period of time (and remember these kids earn far more than they used to) then i would be smart enough to have put this money away. I think that is more to do with upbringing than it is to do with footballers in general (I would agree that maybe a lot of footballers are from a family background that isn't to do with this mentality).

whatever you think, these guys will be having a leg up in life over most people if they make it into the academies and thats before accounting for the job they are doing i.e. football is a hobby unless you're assou ekotto. How they choose to spend their wealth or spare time before getting a real job (if they don't make it) is something else.

yeah... like to think for usre. you should have a huge advantage and time to do education or set up a business sure.

but some guys... well they are more ruddock than jones.

I'd like to think i'd not have wasted it all or even wasted 25% but i do think big cars show theres a lot of expectation these days that the gravy never stops.

I think the core of it is back to eccleston and what i viewed as him being greedy looking to push lfc for a golden contract and ending up then bypassed.

and why i said sinclair take note.

Ideally, they'd only see a fraction of the money they earn every week: spending money if you like. The rest should be invested to set them up for life
if everything were to go "pear shaped". Finding the right people to do that would be tricky. Something Gordon Taylor and the PFA could help with.
    He gets paid plenty.

his hand is in quite a few pies no question.

a trust fund til age 25 with a stipend to live on (and you could live well on 100k a year)

that would sort out a lot of young guys.

I agree, the FA should do more to protect young players and make sure there is some security if it doesn't work out.
